Winter wheels and tyres on today

Featured Replies

But cars and tyres are very different to say 20 years ago. I had several metros which were fine in the snow on skinny tyres with a tread pattern which look very similar to today's winter tyres. Compare modern "summer" tyres to ones your dad's Sunbeam.Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

Interesting.

  • I always find it amusing when any thread on winter tyres attracts the inevitable reply of   "I've never used winter tyres in my life and have absolutely not one iota of experience with them whatsoev

  • Those who don't understand Winter Tyres think they are ONLY for snow

  • The point of winter tyres is not to protect summer tyres. It is to protect your car (and it's occupants) by being safer in winter, along with enabling you to continue to drive when there is snow aroun

Yes, in terms of compound and tread pattern the "summer" tyres of 20 or 30 years ago were more like the all-season tyres of now. Summer tyre design has become more tuned towards excellent wet and dry handling in recent years, but at the expense of grip on snow and ice.

And mainly wider as well which further hinders grip on snow/ice.

I actually agree.

My dad drove around in a mini / Sunbeam in snow and never had problems of complaints.

I drove in snow when younger and never had 2nd thoughts about it.

But in those days i think my dad just got on with it!

And so did i.

But with the hype, more media coverage.

Me getting older hence less bold.

The more availability of winter tyres and

It has snowed more than in previous decades...

I just ordered my 1st winters ever...

Just my own thoughts ...

I own a old mini thats on skinny 10" wheels,my octavia is on 18" wheels with tyres nearly 3 times as wide as the mini's.....thats why the mini would be fine in the snow & my octy is crap & needs winters on.

You can see this when temps are above 7deg C, in my experience with them. I find I have to adjust throttle input a little in 2nd sometimes, otherwise my Wintracs will spin up when summers wouldn't.

Not a problem per se, just a result of the different compound and slightly warmer temps than is optimum for winter rubber.

Thanks, glad to hear others have noticed this. Also had 33PSI on the fronts so have reduced it. Think I will be getting some Continental winters when these Pirellis are done, after looking at that test Ultrasonic posted, cheers.

Having seen the forecast mine are going on tomorrow or monday.

I drove without winters for years. The first time I put a set on the difference was enough to make me never want to go without again.

Having seen the forecast mine are going on tomorrow or monday.

Wot forecast?

Lol...very good

Wow, seems I left it too late, not sure if this is relevant now!

Anyhow I've taken the photo's now so I need to post them!

Before the arguments there was a discussion on centre caps for Audi alloys.

I bought some 70mm Skoda stickers to fit over my 70mm Audi winter wheel centre caps.

They are good quality stickers but despite this the centre cap is just too domed for them to fit properly, even after removing the little chrome Audi logo's.

So as a last ditch attempt I cut them down. It's only a temporary botch as the water will easily get behind them now, I give it a week or too tops.

Plan B under development!

Although another Skoda with the Audi TT Trapez alloys at least its not another Octavia / vRS so Wardy should be happy :giggle:

My Superb with standard 17" summers looked under-wheeled but now it looks even worse, I'm hoping the suspension still needs to settle a little after being jacked-up!

Front wheel = factory standard 17" Triffid - summer wheels

Rear wheel = 17" Audi TT Trapez winter wheels (£200 eBay) - Avon Ice Tourer ST (£100 / corner fitted)...

You made a great job of the center caps silver. I don't have to worry about spare wheels as winters on standard wheels are the only thing that fit over my brakes on my R36

All we need now is some cold weather

They aren't brakes, they are dinner plates!

345mm?

Just what I was thinking!

Took it out for a spin to check everything was OK (no vibrations etc.) and the outside temp was 8 degrees here in York at 3pm!

It's much colder early on a morning when I'm on my way to work though.

Er yes . My rearcalipers are like my vrs fronts

Mine have gone on this morning.

What tyre pressures are you all running on yours?  I put 2.2 bar al round to see what they feel like.

I was amazed when taking the wheels off at the amount of audi logos on the hubs etc,  no skoda ones in view.
