So they're a standalone operation you think Chris?

  • I always find it amusing when any thread on winter tyres attracts the inevitable reply of   "I've never used winter tyres in my life and have absolutely not one iota of experience with them whatsoev

  • Those who don't understand Winter Tyres think they are ONLY for snow

  • The point of winter tyres is not to protect summer tyres. It is to protect your car (and it's occupants) by being safer in winter, along with enabling you to continue to drive when there is snow aroun

Looks like it Steve

Interesting stuff, not sure where my tyre fitter was coming from then.

The reason I asked is that they were the same price as the Avon Ice Tourer, the fitter going as far to say they (Matador) was a better tyre.

It's a shame Skoda don't fit them from new, especially given the heritage!

Anyone heard of Matador winter tyres?

They are made by Continental, apparantley...

I can't comment on their winter tyres, but I had a pair of their summer tyres on the front of my old Octy. Much better grip than the originals, but I wore them down to the limit in 15 months - the quickest I've ever got through a set of tyres. As it happens they weren't bad in the snow (winters '10/'11 & '11/'12) either.

No.

In my defence it was only a 110 TDI, not a vRS - I don't think they would have managed a year on a high powered car. Still pretty good for the price (around £65 from what I recall).

My Conti 5's have worn down in 5 months and 6000 miles (fronts)..beat that!!

Not impressed...Matadors would have been cheaper...LOL

Were you trying to keep up with Alan? If so I'm surprised they lasted that long :giggle:

LOL....Cant understand why they have worn down so quick.....I haven't gone mad...Must be the engine weight over the wheels

We have the Matador MP59 (winter tyre) on the Octavia vRS.  They've done one winter on our old Audi A6 quattro avant and the two previous winters on the vRS.  They've been fantastic and have plenty of life left in them.  Volkswagen used to spec Matadors as an OEM tyre years ago.

They had good (summer) tyres on and were through a company that specialises in selling used alloys so this will have inflated the price.

There are plenty more...

I paid £200 for mine (with two illeagal and two well worn tyres) only this week. Not bad when new 16" steels are more than £50 each.

I held out for a set that didn't need refurbing and budgeted £200 for the wheels and £400 for the tyres.

I don't know how others do it but the cheapest quote I got for an alloy wheel refurb was £50 + VAT per wheel. I knew I wanted 17" alloys so was aware I'd have to find a set in good nick if I wanted premium tyres for £600 all in.

Fitted with brand new Continental WinterContact TS830P in 225/45/17.

Look much better than the old A3 Sport alloys that I had before. The lower offset means they don't look like they are tucked right in the arches and gives the car a much better stance.

I know winter tyres are meant to be functional but part of the reason I bought a vRS was because it looked much better than the other Octavias (IMO)- I couldn't bear to be running around on steelies for 5 months!

Plus, I bought the wheels for £80 and sold the tyres that came with them for £76!! £200 for a refurb and they are good as new- Exactly £51 each wheel is probably not any dearer than steels to be honest!

Wardy- my wheels didn't come with Audi caps and the VW ones fitted are slightly too small. Do you have the Audi caps kicking about? Any chance you could let me know the part numbers so I can either order some new ones or at least order some blanks in the right size please? Unless of course you fancy parting with your Audi ones.... ;)

Grrr, I'm having a centre cap predicament.

I was hoping that the Skoda caps would be a direct fit, but they aren't. The Audi caps are bigger.

Steve, did you manage to find a solution?

The Skoda caps are 55mm with 50mm clips.

The Audi ones off the Trapez alloys (same as yours) are 70mm with 60mm clips.

The only ones I can find that might fit (that I can add Skoda stickers to) are these...

...but they have a 63mm clips which I think will be too big or at least a very tight fit!

I can't see the back to see if they have the metal ring (as with the Skoda and Audi caps) either...

If they fit there are at least some 70mm Skoda stickers available...

Those last ones could be good for my wheels. The only question is whether they will fit on the domed centres of my wheels.

Nope, I'm stuck as well I'm afraid. The ones I thought would do but won't clip in :(

Looks like I'm going to have to be the guinea pig then as I ain't having no Audi caps on my Skoda!

I don't want to put them back in this season either - so have just left them out for now. Seeing as they're pretty difficult to get them out cleanly, without taking the wheels off again.

The issue with the ones I had lined up is with the inside edge. The front face is a perfect fit. Much like Chris was saying with his, that it needs the metal retaining ring (as our original caps have) so that they locate and secure properly.

I've ordered another blank set, that have a metal retaining ring on the inside this time, so will see how it goes....

The ones I described fit perfectly BUT they have a metal ring

I tried the other sort..they fall out straight away

I learnt they must be fitted with a metal ring type cap

Don't know if this was directed at me or Wardy but my solution was to buy some Audi caps so not what you wanted to hear I guess!

I bought these cheap replicas for £6.99

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281200410316?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_717wt_932

Might be useful for you to get the dimensions from?

These fit well once they are in but they are very tight going in (maybe just my powder coated wheels?).  So much so that I snapped the lugs on one so I've had to order another set :@

They do also have the retaining ring in the back but I had to remove that to get them to fit!

I'm happy enough with the Audi ones though as the background colour is almost a perfect match for my wheels.

Come to think of it, the Audi rings may come off, allowing a sticker to be put on top?

If either of you wants my broken one to play with I can post it?

Sorry Chris- I missed that.

Will be interesting to hear how the sitckers cope with the weather.  I bought some cheap wheel centre stickers for a runabout I had last year and they were gubbed within a few months.
