Engine Mount Bolts Sheered......

Featured Replies

So, about 2 weeks ago i hit a matress in the inside lane of the Ediburgh City Bypass at about 80mph. Just cought it in the headlights, swerved, but hit it with the N/S. Threw the N/S up about a foot, slammed down on both wheels. The impact also smashed my under-tray. Stoped, had a look, puled bits of under-tray off to make it safe, both tyres (18s) still inflated and no sign of the car pulling to one side or any vibration through the drive train/suspension.

Saturday there, i was heading down the M90 to Edinburgh from Aviemore, just passed Dunfermline Jnc, hit the smallest pot hole in the world, and heard a POP, then a nasty grinding noise that changed with the engine revs. This disappeared so i pressed on, then started to get a vibration through the steering wheel. Pulled in at the layby before the Road Bridge had a look, and bugger me my engine was sitting down on the O/S!!!

Got it back to my folks with the AA. Took it to bits yesterday to find that the engine mount pins have SHEERED clean. Its an easy fix to get bolts out, its the access to the bolts........NIGHTMARE.........so its getting picked up today so the proffesionals can deal with it. Im getting to old for dicking about with cars in the street at this time of the year...........

The exact same thing happened to me. I had a cambelt replaced by a local garage.

One day i pull up to a roundabout and pop i here the sound of metal on metal and all sorts of rubbing.

I pull in and check. I lift bonnet and straight away i see engine dropped as your pic.

I then have a word with the garage. They chose not to replace the engine mount stretch bolts and reuse them and probably over torque them and bang that is what happens.

I was very lucky not to mangle cambelt and have major engine work, so are you buddy(especially still driving it). As all that was stopping this was the cam cover on the side of the inner wing and What a bad design that has a engine bolted upwards that can drop when a mount goes.

I had my bolts removed as had length sticking out when bracket was removed.

Make sure you renew mount and bolts and never reuse stretch bolts.

What is the blue liquid running down the belt and dripping onto the pulley, in your last photo? Sign of more damage?
