Dipped Headlights on VRS

Featured Replies

So the VRS has auto levelling headlights.

Is there a way of defining the default level of the dipped lights (like the old fashioned level scroll wheel)

I feel they are too low on dipped and would like them to be raised a little - not to blind oncoming drivers but to be able to see a little further up the road.

Ideas?

No as they're set at the factory to meet legal requirements, all you'll do is dazzle people.

That's odd as I thought it could be done!

Xenon's are too bright/dazzling to allow for manual control. My wife's old Renault can do it with halogens but the BMW with Xenon's cannot, and neither (I think) can the VRS.

Not possible on any model with xenons. You get the level adjuster only with halogens (next to main light switch).

Xenons do adjust however automatically with changing load of the car.

Do the Xenon's do their little dance when you first switch them on at night?

Yes they do the dance, but I am convinced the headlight beam could be higher and still not dazzle people - it really is quite low.

Guess I have to get used to it...

However I had xenons on the polo, which had manual up down control, so probably not a legal thing?

By law in the UK xenons must have automatic levelling and automatic washers....

I think the OP is asking if xenons can be adjusted and the answer is yes - albeit with VCDS and not as a driver option. It is feasible that they're out of adjustment even on a new car.

Thanks for the info, it's certainly a bit annoying and may be worth taking to the garage to see if they are correct.

As I have the car booked in to have the washer jets checked out (they stick) I will ask them to check!

My Mk II facelift Scout has xenons, and as delivered they were calibrated too low. The range of correct angles is shown on the diagram @ http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_180.htm. I found my dipped lights had a range of around 15 metres in level ground, which was no where near enough on dark dual carriageways and motorways. I took the car into the dealers and asked them to re-calibrate them and the range is far better now - the top of the beam is almost level, so it doesn't shine into the windscreeen of cars but has a really good range even on dip.

The red band applied to my car so in a range from 0.5% to 2% down from the horizontal, as delivered it was nearer 4% from the horizontal, so reset under warranty.

The VRS has adaptive lighting which changes the beam length and spread depending on a number of factors ie. speed, steering input etc. you can change this setting in the infotainment system through the individual driving mode I believe. This might solve the problem...or not, but worth a try maybe.

There was an O3 delivered in Romania where the lights where way too high and the driver was blinding everyone. That's how it came from the factory and it got fixed at the dealership! May be worth having yours checked if you're saying they're too low. The factory ain't perfect apparently. :)
