Clunking noise and gear lever movement

Featured Replies

Hi All, again,

I've a Superb Mk1 Tdi 2005 100bhp (manual 5sp) with clunking noise from front left. Of course I suspected Arms, cv joint, anti-roll bar bushes etc.. But everything is tight. Its covered 90thou miles and is a well cared car. I've noticed also when driving at low speeds if I press accelerator on-off, on-off, on-off there's quite a bit of movement in gear lever which is making me suspect gearbox mounts???? Can worn engine mounts have same effect on gear lever??? The noise is more noticable or rough surface at low speeds and there seems to be an amount of transmission slap, I'm not sure if this is normal on a superb with 90k miles cause the rest of the car is as tight as a drum.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions,

                                                                                                            Gavin.

Get all arms, cv joint etc. checked. It has nothing to do with the gearbox. It's normal for a PD engine to give after a lot when accelerating.

Check the rubber lining of the snub mount at the front. If this is damaged (usually when a dealer changes the cambelt) the power unit will move up and down on torque reversals.

Thanks rotodiesel for replying, Im gonna get car up on a friend's lift on Saturday and we'll see if that front mount is worn. It makes sense that it would cause the issue that Im seeing and no doubt if worn will put pressure on other mounts. Is it a rubber ring type bush? And is it a big job to fit?

                              Thanks again.

Pull the front into the service position as if to change a cambelt. The front mount rubber is then exposed and can be pulled out to replace.

Does pulling the front into service position mean taking front bumper off, radiator out etc...????????

Bumper skin comes off, then a few bolts to remove. Fit a couple of long M8 bolts to the main frame member attachments and the whole front slides forwards by about 3" without disconnecting anything at all. The radiator stays in place.

Yeah pics please.. I think mine does something similar.. every so often I get a thud when taking off, it's as if something has just moved into place.. only happens every so often, sometimes every time I take off and sometime will go days without doing it.  I thought either an engine mount or else the driveshaft rotating and taking up slack.. I just had all upper arms replaced and it was just Mot'd..
