Spoke to a mechanic about the leaking doors in the Fabia

I was getting 2 new tyres fitted earlier and asked the guy about the leaking doors as the place he works at is a VW specialist so I thought he may have come across them before

He said that he has previously drilled an extra drain 2 holes in the doors of a Fabia and used to special paint on them to stop them rusting, and he has managed to stop the leaking doors, he said he did it without even removing the door cards

The carriers still leak slightly but enough water leaves through the drain holes so there isn't a build up of water in the carrier

Would this work?? I've looked at plenty of threads on leaking doors on here and surely it can't be that simple, otherwise everyone will have done it already

Although it seems a bit barbaric to drill the doors (and unrealistic to expect a bit of paint pushed around the hole with a brush to stop rusting for more than a short while), there's probably more risk to the car by having paddling pools in the rear footwells than some tiny holes on the insides of the doors with rusty edges, a few years down the line.

If I hadn't already done a thorough(ly successful) job with Plumber's Gold I may have tried this method.

I wish that solution made any sense to me, it seems crazy to go to all the effort of sealing the doors then deliberately drilling them in roughly the same kind of places where the whole sealing is an issue in the first place

I thought the idea of sealing them would be so they go past the front edge of the doors so maybe they can find exit somewhere else ? Are there holes on the underside of the doors for this already ?

the doors already have drain holes at the lowest part, but if the car is parked on even a slight slope the water that drips past the glass drops onto the inside of the carrier instead , the holes we drill allow what water gets to the wrong side of the carrier get back inside the door instead of dripping onto the carpet, the tape stops it dripping inside the car and leaves a channel between the tape and the carrier if you look at the pics, then the water runs thru the holes and and away from the inside of the car.

even if the door does start to rust around the hole it is never going to rust the door away in 10 years etc..

You would think by now a car maker could make a car that is water tight......if they really wanted to..

I did exactly that to my Octy 1 last year almost to the day and no wet carpets since.I know there are drain holes already but as far as I am aware they are under the rubber in a channel.I did the same in the corners of the boot lid just in case. I drilled 2 quite small holes in the middle of the door bottom and then just added a squirt of wd into the holes.Older vehicles all used to have visable drain holes in the doors so can't be all bad..

This is how i currently park outside my house:

The side pointed at by the arrow is the passenger side and the front passenger side is leaking at the moment, i sealed the rear passenger side a while back but there's still occasionally a little puddle in the door seal when i open the door, not a lot though and not enough to get the carpet damp

Would parking on a flat surface reduce the amount of water that is leaking in??

The leak is back !  :(  Same time of year and same venue (Butlins) I know, some will say it serves me right for going there in the first place but there you are. Car stood out in the heavy rain and water in the drivers footwel and also rear footwell. Anyway, put cheap nappies on the floor and drove home. Eventually found the water is coming in behind the clutch pedal so the doors are not the problem. Checked all the usual suspects like drain holes and they are clear but the chief suspect is the bonnet cable grommet. It looks ok but only a complete idiot would design a grommet in the bottom of a drainage tray. I will seal it with silicone as a temporary measure but definitely replace it asap. I poured water in the drainage tray and it runs out the bottom behind the front wheel so all is well there. Just a pain in the nether regions as there are so many possible leak points. :swear:
