Scruffy Virgin.

Featured Replies

Had the media package installed back in April.

Today, in readiness for a new carpet being fitted next week, we decided to shift all the free standing cupboards out of the way, and to my horror I discovered that the cable installation has been left grossly oversized and spiraling upwards behind the units, and not attached to the wall anywhere that's not immediately visible.

Rang them up and they are coming out to inspect and complete the job properly.

I shall be shifting more furniture and stuff throughout and in the garage to see where else they've 'cut a few corners'.

Shoddy workmanship isn't in it!

Knew I shouldn't have left these two Virgin goons alone unsupervised..

Most of the time they're simply sub contractors even though they have the uniform and van.

Did they have to run a cable from the street? If so I wouldn't go doing any gardening unless you want to cut the cable

Our street to house Virginmedia cable is inside a green plastic sleeve and it's not that far underground. Luckily its covered in gravel however my neighbours is in the flower bed.

I never let people mess with my stuff unsupervised, be it my car or my house; I have caught them cutting corners or making up expensive work any number of times.

My mum wouldnt take my advice and let builders work unsupervised on an massive extension project - they cut every corner they could think of, left the property in a dangerous condition with over half the stuff she paid for missing; it took nearly 20 years and tens of thousands in legals costs to get the compensation out of them (originally £40k, they eventually paid £90k with costs and interest).

Even getting my loft insulated for free, I was up the ladder keeping an eye on them.

The monkeys from sky managed to drill through the wall and the downpipe from the guttering, and then they just ran the cable through the wall and downpipe...

I know they used a crack in the concrete front path to run the cable, but they concreted it up after so wasn't that bothered tbh, but just goes to show how they are looking for any means of cutting corners.

Just shifted some stuff in the garage, and the cable is just lying on the floor!

NOT impressed.

Have I read that correctly?

They ran the cable down and inside the downpipe from the guttering?  :o

They ever appear on 'Rouge Traders'?

Some right ole skanks on that .

They drilled the hole from the inside of the house through the wall and straight through the downpipe and then bought the wire round the house, through the downpipe and through the wall. Helpfully they drilled the hole at an upward angle so that if it had rained the water would have run down the cable into the house.

To be fair when I complained their boss went absolutely mental. He came and watched the monkeys fix it while loudly telling them what he thought of their work.

Virgin did a terrible job here. They literally just shoved a mass of cable behind a bush, when we moved the bush we saw tons of cable behind it and it just looked untidy, rather than get them out I sorted it myself to save the hassle, but the point is I shouldn't have to.

....and I thought it was probably just me being grumpy!  :o

That's in essence what they've done here.

Don't they have the ability to shorten cables?

2 disappointing threads in 1 day :D

Clearly it's a difficult task :)

Several years ago I was installing a Sky dish on the outside of our place.

"Professional" installers arrived at the house opposite. Fitted dish to front of house. Owner wanted cable entry at rear of house. Faced with a similar situation I clipped cable down side of house.

The "Professional" installers simlpy threw a long length of cable over the roof! Used more cable that costs them a few quid but saved time by not having to clip down side of house.

The cable went over the ridge where it would soon wear through with a little bit of movement.

If you want a job doing right, do it yourself!

Sadly not, this was 1989, so it would probably have been Esther and her crew anyway, looong before Rogue Traders (please note the difference between "Rogue" and a red colour  ).

In recent years I had a garage trying to fail my car for a defective fog lamp it didnt have during an MOT, another claim my water pump was dying (it wasnt), and the old regular of not balancing wheels properly if you arent watching them.

Most people wouldn't notice the difference of the last, they balance the wheels well enough that there is no obvious shudder until above 80 mph, but if you drive above those speeds (in Germany of course), the wheel shudder gets very noticeable. Since I started watching them during wheel balancing, I experience no shudder at all, all the way up to 120mph  (and possibly beyond).

Sadly what sky/virgin pay their sub contractors is the reason for the sub standard work. Talking to the guys that put my hd box in ten installs a day is not uncommon. So if it takes a hour to do one install that's ten hours a day NOT including travel time between jobs.

The one in our current house was already here and as we have a handy basement it runs unnoticed from the street into the basement and from there it comes out from grates up the side of the house to where we need it. Or through the floor from the basement.

At the old house it was a hilarious episode. It was telewest back then, and it took various attempts to get it in.

First they said they'd run it through the hall, we said no. Then they wanted to drill through the front wall, run it through the living room, drill through that wall and run it to the back room (where the pc was) err no.

Then they said they would run it over the roof. Ok. So they turn up to find our hole in the street outside the house has been cemented up. So they went away and we had to wait for someone to come and de-cement it. They also said they couldn't run it over the roof as they aren't allowed on the roof. So we said we'd get the cable over the roof ready. So we did.

The next team turned up and said they can't run it over the roof as it needs clipping down, and they aren't allowed on the roof! *sigh* so then they said they could run it through the loft, but they couldn't go in the loft because it wasn't boarded. Omg. So my mum said 'I'LL run it through the loft!!'

So she ended up going up there herself to feed it through!

Mad!

Man from Virgin came and tidied up the mess today.

He agreed that it was shoddy but did state that they (contractors) are under pressure to get as many installations done as possible.

Cowboys. When I had my Virgin BB ,it went to my spare room to my PC. I left them to it. BAD mistake. Years ago ,when I moved in ,I surveyed the place and made it easy for the BT bloke to get it in quick. Wife was left with instructions ,which intrigued him, till he found out my job. He ran a black cable down the corner and into the black part of the wall -cable almost invisible. Virgin ran their black cable up the white face at an angle. Needless to say ,they were back , with manager. They'd even managed to put the attenuator in the wrong place ( technical error,I admit, but one cowboys would make). But even BT are using dangerous cowboy contractors to do installations, climbing unsafe poles .
