Argh.. Dirty exhaust tips...WHY?

Featured Replies

Ever since I got my vrs something strange and, to many I'm sure, pointless has bugged me. The exhaust tip seems to pick up MEGA amounts of road tar and grime...WHY!!!? At first I thought it had something to do with the finish on the standard tips but since having the oval fitted I'm just in from washing the car and scrubbing the tip, claying it and using metal polish on it and it still isn't as shiny as what I'd really like or have managed Iv the past for other cars... anyone else?

I have a tool that will help bring them up. Its a cone brush type that you put in a normal dril and fetches them up brilliantly. Its called a mothers power cone.

This is what ive achieved:

No harm using some mild wet & dry (wet) before any kind of shining up. :)

Well, there's soot from the exhaust, obviously, although if the car is only used for decent length trips this is less of a problem (most soot is during warm up when the car is running rich).  Otherwise, the problem is that the exhaust gets hot so any dirty water hitting it evaporates, leaving the grime behind.  Keep cleaning!

Some cars have a kind of double walled arrangement at the tailpipe which means the bit on the outside isn't as hot, and cleans itself a bit better.  Ot it's just an aerodynamic effect, and the vRS sucks more sprayed crud back onto the car.

It will get more tar on it due to the proximity of the N/S/R wheel, plus as its hotter than paintwork usually, it will stick like glue, compared to paint where it only sticks due to the nature of tar, rather than temperature.

A liberal application of Teflon spray then wiped off on cleaned surfaces does wonders.

Its an exhaust pipe what did you expect ?

You seem to be "on one" today - feeling OK?  :)

WOW matty thats impressive!

I'd have to put it down the octavia design i guess, somthing to do with where the exhaust is placed in relation to rear wheels

Maybe it to be a bit more durable to road grime after countless clay sessions, polishes and rim wax applications on it? Like every other s/s exhaust tip i've had on other cars.. Call me crazy but i like to take care of my car and last time i checked the exhaust tip was part of it  :wonder:

Mines is a custom, but i'd imagine if you went to a custom exhaust shop they could remove the tips and replace em with the same/similar ones. Think they're only tacked on

Twin Irmscher tips on my daughter's corsa C are the same - real PITA to keep clean of crud and tar. Not helped by only getting the chance to clean it once in a while!

Sarge.

Thats odd sarge because my first car about 4/5 years back was a corsa c with a sebring 4" backbox (looked and sounded  ) and it was spotless most of the time!

Solvol Autosol, 2 rags and some elbow grease.

Its what I use on my bike too.

Yeah what fatbloke said.

Give it a normal soapy clean to get loose grime off, then a thorough Autosol+fine wire wool, then polish up with autosol + cloth.

Then it should just be able to be wiped clean every couple of weeks.

I use autosol guys lol and wire wool! Bit of a car cleaning enthusiast tbh, just seems the VRS gathers more grime that other automovehicles haha
