My first VRS... What I've done so far!

Featured Replies

So as some of you may (or may not) know I'm a complete noob to the Skoda scene. Have my first VRS around three weeks at this stage. Had been gathering a few bits since I bought it and only got to fit them this weekend as its always dark when I get home from the office!

Started off fitting some LED's to the car, from Fizzmo on eBay. Some 5 SMD wedge base bulbs and 6 SMD festoons for the interior and 3 SMD canbus festoons for the plate lights.

Next up were the German style plates from a company here in Ireland by the name of Eireplates, where I got a deal including plate surrounds and a 3 disc holder for tax etc.

After that came OEM mudflaps which went on very easily, had to drill two small holes in the rear flaps to get them to line up with the arch liner holes but other than that I had no issues.

I then removed the old disc holders, dealer stickers and gave it a good "de-gluing"  :giggle:  before fitting the new one! Next there was a new bonnet prop stand (little orange plastic gadget) and a fluid and oil top up!

Then finally a good wash, no time or weather for polish and wax I'm afraid!

Not a whole lot accomplished but just a few little bits to keep me occupied for a Saturday morning.

I've got a few bits planned for the future but when I get to them remains to be seen....

HID's

Yellow Fog Lights

Alarm "Beep" when locking and maybe unlocking if possible

2nd Rear Fog activated

Lowering (possibly Eibach springs)

Annoying dints in front wing to be taken out and colour code grill surround

Powdercoating alloys

I have a feeling the first four will be this side of Christmas  ... as for the last three.....

Any recommendations or thoughts will be gratefully accepted!

Welcome to the forum :)

Me and you are a newbie, I just got my VRS last weekend. We think a like, as I'll be doing the exact same mods to my Skoda.

Similar mods:

HID 6000K

Window Tints

Yellow Fog lamps

Gloss black wheels

Gloss black front grill/s

Annoying dings on the wing/s

Rear parking sensors

H&R 40MM drop

Green or Yellow Calipers

Black Skoda badges

Skoda Satnav

Retrofit cruise control

BMC/APR Induction kit/BMC panel filter

EBC Green stuff pads

Maybe a few more....

Personnally I'll go for H&R springs, as Eibachs will only go 25mm, HID's I'd recommend 6000K as they will give you that blue tint affect.

Lamin X sell a tube of yellow tint of sheet, I heard good and positive reviews.  I need to change my number plate lights to LED ones, can you send me link please?

If you're going for a big(ish) drop on springs, you might want to think about new shocks too as it'll most likely bugger them up running deeper into their travel than they're used to.

Luckily mine came with cruise control factory fitted! I'm in two minds about the tint, I think it might make the car look too dark over all?

As for the yellow fogs, I think I'll change the bulbs instead of tinting the lens. The lens tint will no doubt be easier but I dont know how good it will look stuck there full time? Yellow bulbs aren't constantly noticeable...just my two cents! :)

The springs will probably be Eibach for me, I've used them before and could not praise them highly enough, I got about 30mm drop with them and kept 95% of the original ride comfort. As my VRS is used daily on all sorts of roads I dont want a huge drop. :)

HID's I'd recommend 6000K as they will give you that blue tint affect.

Personally I wouldn't recommend 6000K HIDs, especially if you are using them to drive with as opposed to posing

5000K are about the limit you need to go to for a white light which is effective - anything else might be bluer, but performance will be reduced

If I think back, I do remember my Passat B6 were fitted with 6000K and after a year the bulbs/ballast start to become dull and dim. I guess your right with the 5000K. As for springs, I will change them to Eibachs instead. Don't want to change shocks, as drive daily on bumpya$$ roads.

Fog lights will be a pain to change, as it get's kinda tricky to remove them.

You can pull out the lower grill both left and right side, I read somewhere too that the circular moulding around the fog lamp pops out but I've yet to try this. My tactic will be passenger side from above through the access hole and then see where it goes from there. I'll have to remove some of the grill/surround to do the drivers side!

Could you take pics when removing the lower grills? I had a try today, and the damn thing wouldn't pop out.

That is what I have done,

Not noticeable when off but brilliant when lit.

There's nothing to take a picture of really, not being blunt! I just sort of pulled the grill out and downwards slightly... they are quite stubborn. One was pretty well stuck but the other was partly out. I haven't even got the bulbs yet to change but hopefully tomorrow. I just wanted to see how to remove the grill as I had read it was a bit of a challenge.

Get that blue tint effect on your lights and dazzle everyone else! excellent!

Also why yellow fog lamps???

Not exactly, if Xenons are set up correctly they are the best light you will get on the road. I'd much rather see every car fitted with xenons (provided they have the correct lens) and know that people can see clearly than to have pi$$ poor halogen bulbs and have them squinting down the road.

Also yellow fogs are much better at their job than normal halogen bulbs, the more yellow the light, the better it will cut through fog. The whiter the light the more it reflects off the moisture drops in the fog and comes back to blind the driver.

Plus yellow fogs look cool!

Yellow fogs #1

Yellow fogs does look very coool :D

I tried to take the blimmin grills off, but it will not nudge. Going to try tomorrow and fit 100W fog lights, I know there not legal, but still.

On the yellow fog question, a lower light temperature (lower kelvin number) will provide more useful illumination in fog or misty conditions.

For the higher temperature (more blue) HID question, you're simply adding more of a filter to the light output. So it may appear to you to be better, but I'd echo the suggestion to not go above 5000k. I use 4300k bulbs for example, which are VAG OEM (manufacturer) temperature.

The end result! :) The drivers side was a bit of a pain having to stretch the arm around from the front lower grill. Depending how good you are at working in the dark at awkward angles (  ) it might be a better idea to get it from underneath when the car is on a lift. I suggest you consult your significant other! :giggle:

Passenger side was a breeze through the access hole in the engine bay!

They're blinding me just looking at the photo! Take it that pic was on main beam?

It wasn't actually, that was just the normal halogen dipped beam. I think the camera on the phone has bigged it up quite a bit! They're not that bright at all.

Photographing light is notoriously difficult to capture accurately  :)

You really need to see them in the flesh

  • 2 weeks later...

The dents have since been taken out, just by chance really. Happened to meet a dent removal guy and mentioned to him, he had it done in about half an hour. It's not 100% (through no fault of his, it was just an awkward spot on the wing) but to be honest, I'd rather leave it this way than getting a spray job done and it not to blend in properly!

If anyone wants his number here in Ireland you can PM me as he was very good at his job and not at all hard to deal with!

On a side note, I now have my 4300k HID's fitted and coded correctly! Epic lighting from londoncolour on eBay!
