Playing video files on sd card on Amundsen.

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone had success playing video off sd card on the Bolero/Amundsen?

I've been trying over the last couple of days with handbrake on osx with various codecs and containers, bitrates etc etc but to no success.

Doing my head in.

As far as I know only Columbus unit can play videos when the car is stationary.

I can play movies on my bolero from my iPod, when stationary of course.

I've managed to play video via the Mitsumi mdi cable connected with the 30 pin plug to an iPhone 4S. I've not tried it with a SD card, but I'm sure I've seen in the Amundsen manual a list of all the recognised coding.

\that's what I've been trying to follow but then it also says it plays flack.

What problem are you having exactly?

I can't remember the exact message but nothing but mp4 shows (manual mentions avi etc) and then when you click on it it gives an error - media playback error or some such.

Tried this a few times myself and even when following the instructions in the manual it doesn't recognise the files.

It seems that only printed manual lists video codecs, the one which can be downloaded (http://new.skoda-auto.com/en/mini-apps/owners-manuals/octavia) only has listing of audio formats, even chapter names are different. Audio/video on printed edition, Audio on pdf version(I have Hungarian print version, so someone can confirm if same differences apply for English version as well) . So there was some decision not to support videos on Amundsen at some point, so if one wants video there is no other option, only Columbus.

Question is, is Amundsen technically capable to play videos and the feature is only disabled?

Thanks for pointing that out.

That's ridiculous. If it's in the manual when you buy the car it should be able to do it.

Really not happy. I spend a few hours a week waiting for swmbo etc to get out of work, shopping etc. The reason I didn't get Columbus was because video was covered in the admundsen manual, now I'm going to have to pay god knows what to get Columbus retrofitted?

Dealers rota day off today. Will be phoning first thing tomorrow. Will update on progress.

Pick her up closer to the time she will be finished - no time to watch videos !! Cheaper than retro-fitting ;)

Or buy another device that is portable to take in the car with you to watch said videos. Again most probably cheaper than retro-fitting.

My point is though that I should have a product as it's advertised. If one of the major uses for your car was missing when you picked it up would you be happy? If for example your 220bhp petrol vrs came out of the factory with 100bhp?

Why should I have to use a portable device and deal with the mess of cables etc?

I'm with you on this. I picked up my Octy 2 days ago and the manual lists video files as playable. I had a look at the info display on the Amundsen and along with software versions etc there's a line which says "Media Codec - not installed" if I remember correctly. Might just be a software update that's needed, if that's the problem.

I'll have a play around with different file formats and I'll post any progress here.

Update - phoned the dealer yesterday who told me to phone skoda customer services.

Spoke to Skoda who raised "a case" and will get back to me 48 to 72 hours.

And why didn't the dealer contact Skoda?

That's just lazy.

Dealer isn't technical so tbh I didn't argue. Not my area of expertise but I have an ok grasp of video codecs etc.

The manufacturer reserves the right to adjust specification between order and delivery. Its in the fine print. Otherwise if all of a sudden a part was long term unavailable then stop all production all together!

However the manual the car was supplied with states it should work.

Also i'm pretty sure Skoda haven't 'advertised' that the car will play video either, dont think it's mentioned in any brochure or ad campaign.....

But my manual also tells my how the operate the DSG gearbox and KESSY..... mines a manual without KESSY...

Again, i imagine there is a disclaimer in the manual regarding misprints/misinformation and the classic "not available in all areas". It would be good if they could come up with a fix tho

The manual states it covers all models and equipment (or something to that effect) whereas the radio manual is specific to the Amundsen(or Columbus or whatever you have fitted)

As an update

Skoda clearly couldn't give a f**k and have told me they don't know if it should work or not but the disclaimer in the back of the manual means it isn't their problem.

On another point. Admundsen doesn't appear to support ntfs - even though it say it does in the manual.

If NTFS is not supported, what format do you recommend?  I am preparing an SD card with my music this week in preperation for the (hopefully soon!)new arrival.

FAT32 is usually the one to go for.
