Bluetooth control (that hurt...)

Featured Replies

So I've had my Swing unit plus BT installation since I've got the car and it's worked pretty well for calls and most importantly, streaming music to my speakers most of the time I'm in the car (no MDI port unfortunately). However, two things have always bugged me since the very beggining:

1) No track info displayed on the stereo's screen, but only a dull  "BT AUDIO" indication.

2) No possibility to skip tracks from the stereo's controls (either the unit;s or the steering wheel's ones)

I had become familiar with these two issues untill I got in a MY2013 courtesy VW Beetle. I bothered to connect my phone to the car's BT system as I had to do some 100 km with it while my car was being serviced and to my complete awe, when I started the music playback not only did I see the track's info (artist, title etc) on screen but I could also skip tracks back and forward from the steering wheel...  :o  :o  :o  At that point, after wiping a tear from my left eye, I noticed the stereo unit was looking like a RNS 510 one but without Navigation (didn't see no MAP button).

The bitter conclusion was that it became apparent that my phone (a Nexus 4) was perfectly capable of both transmitting the ID3 info to the receiver, and also giving it some basic control (skip tracks) over the playback so why oh why are we not able to do this with our Swing units? Isn't really any update/setting/modification that can be applied to these units in order to give them these two invaluable features of BT audio streaming?

PS. I've been following the android modding scene closely on various devices during the last 4 years and I'd like to believe some kind of "hack" could exist as a solution to this...
