I know - another tyre thread but I have a reason!

Featured Replies

I have PS3s on two of my summers, at the rear while I wear down some Pirelli PZeros on the front :)

I'll likely then buy another pair as they've performed very well. I obviously can't make a normal assessment on FWD wear, but I would be confident that they're likely to offer the best mixture of grip, feedback and a decent wear rate.

Trouble with varying wear speeds is people really do use their cars differently. What someone equates 'I don't hang around' isn't necessarily the same definition for another! That could also be the use of a car's performance in a straight line, where tyre wear doesn't play as large a part.

Also depends on your corning style; some people I find can be driving through a corner while the car is still adapting and hunting for grip, rather than the 'slow in, fast out' approach. I think this, over the course of X thousand miles, could account for quite different wear styles, and wear speed. Then you have the variable of the manufacturer's tyre compound. So no wonder different people see wildly different wear rates with the same car.

  • Have a search around on here and you will soon see that 20k is good for front tyres on a VRS derv. Some even get as little as 6k

  • So where's the different question?

Smooth cornering, anticipated braking and no 1st and 2nd gear heroics seems to keep my tyres going for ever.

Lighter engine though

The dunlops are horrendous for sawtoothing they were also very loud for roadnoise. I had them on from new and they were terrible. Tried Falken 452 and they were very good. Now on Uniroyal rainsport 2 and they are very good also if maybe very slightly noisier than the Falkens.

The sport Maxx RT's?

Going on ratings they should be really quiet. I was thinking of getting those as my next pair but if they are loud I might not. Currently on Falken 914's and they have lasted 13k on the front, grip atm is usless when accelerating

Anyone used Goodyear Efficent Grip? They are rated B fuel, A wet grip and 69 noise

Vredestein ultrac. Great tyres, 105 quid each fitted. Wintracs can also be used year round in the uk, which are supposed to give great adverse weather grip, but I decided not as they are a bit noisier...

Same answer I always give. I run these on the Scout http://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-t1-sport Developed by Toyo in conjunction with Audi as an OEM tyre for their sportier cars so ideally suited to VAG cars & European weather. Grip is excellent & wear reosnable. I started running them on the Nissan & they coped very well with 500 bhp RWD & I can get approaching 10,000 out of the rears on that & always changed when down to 2.5-3mm, any less and the car becomes a total monster in the wet

I agree but the noise was horrendous...so never again

I have Wintrac Extremes on my winter wheels and I wouldn't recommend using them all-year round. Certainly not if you value accurate steering feel and handling when the temps are up past 15deg C.

I ran them a bit late last year, due to moving house, and they were far too soft, especially when the warmer weather started...

Much the conclusion I came to - the guy at the tyre place I go to runs them year round, and theres lots of people on the net who report good results, though.  I went for the ultracs as it is what the car came with, and they have been good tyres.

I put a pair of these on the rears in May. Barely seem to have lost any tread in 12K since then (mostly motorway though), they're very quiet and hold the back end in nicely in the wet. I have cheapo things on the front that came with it and will be heading to BlackCircles.com (other tyre vendors are available) to get myself another pair for the front as economy and grip have become the name of the game out here in the sticks...

I run Michelin PS3 on my Mk2 Octy 2.0 PD and they are fantastic. The budget tyres that were on it at purchase produced snap oversteer in the wet, the PS3s have neutralised the balance and increased steering feel as well as overall grip. I've recently had to perform 2 emerg stops in the wet and the braking grip was phenomenal. They are pricey but awesome. Wear rate so far seems pretty good but will update as this develops.

Getting some Goodyear Efficient grip performance fitted tomorrow. Will report back :)

Eagle F1 comes top in evo 2014 summer tyre test . I will change to them when winters come off coti 5s on before. Not bothered how long they last change mine at 4000 miles . I always want top performance. Can't believe you are upset about 20, 000 miles

indeed, im happy with 13k i got from my current falken 914's

They seem to do very well in most of the tyre tests... I'm going to order 4 this week!

Haha I'm not upset I just wondered if I have the best tyres already or if there are better alternatives which give more miles.... every little helps :)

I'm now running Michelin Pilot Super Sports. See how well these perform on mileage, so far the grip is immense though.

I'm torn between Michelin Pilot Sports and Good Year Eagle F1's

Will make the decision in the new year when I get the 18's refurbished.

Due to an overnight drop in standards of Leicestershire's roads (farm traffic prepping the fields resulting in LOTS of mud) I got 2 more GoodYear Efficient Grips put on the front on Friday and drove to London and back over the weekend. That's all 4 corners on the same rubber and the difference is absurd. The noise of the air whistling over the mirrors is louder than the motorway!

Can't really give a proper assessment of their wet performance on tarmac in the twisty bits as every road around the house is covered in compacted mud so I'm playing it safe for now but for the long cruise, they are stellar and my economy on the run was a marked improvement over the cheapo ones they replaced!

They came with quadruple clubcard points too which kept SWMBO happy

Not bothered how long they last change mine at 4000 miles .

Honestly!??  For what reason?  Are they worn out by that milage?

Eagle F1 Assym vs PS3 would be a tricky decision for sure. Very evenly matched I think.

F1 looks £10 cheaper in 225/40/18 at the moment, which might swing it.

Just got back from getting my Goodyear Efficent Grip Performance's fitted.

The old tyres (falken 914's) lasted 10k and had even wear across the tyre (good thing obviously) but were in the words of the guy changing them at Able fit in bristol "shagged"

Drove home on a mix of dual carridgeway and single track A roads and so far im impressed. Will take a few days to wear in and get a proper feel of them but so far im impressed. Also, Able Fit in Bristol were £40 cheaper than black circles for the pair :)

No not worn out just don't look new. Isell them on . My car has to look mint all the time

When I bought my car it had fairly new Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on and they seemed fine so when they wore down I was going to replace them with the same but saw quite a few recommendations here for the Eagle F1 tyres so gave them a go instead plus they were a little cheaper. I went with them and been quite surprised at how much grip they give, I realise replacing old worn tyres with new ones will seem that way but I don't remember ever being able to put the foot down hard with the Michelins at any age and not risking tyre spin.

Wow! That's a new one on me!

I'm into my detailing and love the car to look mint but I can't say I've ever looked at a car and thought "those worn tyres look really scruffy!".

Fair play to you though if you sell them on, a car will always be safer with fresh tyres.

p.s Have you sen anyone about your unhealthy OCD? :giggle:  ;)
