Catch can selection...

Featured Replies

First off, I've just read a few threads on catch cans, so I have searched!

Basically, I've just bought a FMIC, and before I fit it I want to sort out the CCV, as I don't want the intercooler caked up with oily residue. I don't want to do the elephant mod, as I don't like the idea of putting oil on the roads and outside where I live. Hence I'm looking to buy and fit a catch can.

I've read that CCV outlets are 19mm. So is it absolutely imperative that a 19mm inlet catch can is used, or is it perfectly fine to use a 15mm one with a 19mm adaptor?

If you absolutely need a 19mm one, which ones have people used that are a reasonable price? I don't fancy spending nigh on £100 on a setup. So a cheaper catch can in black is needed....

Anyone?!

I was going to ask the same question soon.

I've heard the £100 jobs are engineered differently to the £20 ones, having a mesh or something within them, so that you can feed the outlets back into the airintake, to create a vacuum effect as with standard.

Scared of just using a 15mm can, as read about increased pressur etc,so My plan was to buy a 20ebay job, and change the inlet to a 19mm one.

Was thinking of doing a group buy or something as the makers of the £20 eBay catch can are based in my city.

So could even go.into the realms of group buy catch cans, adapters and pipes...

Scroll down to the group buy section, Lloyd does a very successful catch can group buy, I think it's on the 4th run now.

The crud that comes out is minimal, or at least in my experience and haven't seen any evidence of anything left on the drive.

A member on here had a really nice neat looking can/tube/tub. It was really small, easy to empty and see through (so you know when it needs emptying). But I can't find who/how/where it was that done it/purchased it from. If I Remeber correctly it didn't cost much either. I already have a catch can (standard eBay jobby) but it's too big and I think some of the oil comes out from th adaptors as you mentioned above. So I'm also on th look for a new setup haha!

You ideally want a oil seperator, these still draw out fumes etc from the crankcase but seperate fluids from gasses.

A empty catch can with no vacuum draw from the inlet is only really suitable for a race engine that gets the oil hot enough to evaporate all the moisture out of the crank case,or a high boost engine that has lots of piston ring blow-by to force out all the gasses/moisture etc.

The connection onto cam cover is circa 21mm,you can't get 21mm oil resistant pipe so I used 22mm which clamped down ok.Connection onto TIP is 19mm.

I'm running the one from Lloyds group buy,bit of a nightmare to fit in the bay though TBH.

Ran one of these on my Rallye which worked very well:

I've got mine vented to air and to be honest there's hardly anything that comes out at all. I was shocked at how little residue actually makes such a mess inside the pipes!

Yeah but remember Dan you have no vacuum draw with the elephant bodge! ;)

The vacuum draw was pulling out the residue when pipe was fitted to TIP :)

I don't think the vacuum effect is substantial though. Ran with the elephant mod through a catch can for over 40k miles in my old car without issue.

In general...

The larger the can the better. Idea is that gas speeds slow massively in the can and oil/crud droplets, fall onto surfaces in the can rather than zooming straight out the outlet.

Filled with a "wool" to encourage vapour dropout. (stainless steel wool/scourer or similar - it must be resistant to fragmenting and corrosion).

Run similar size hoses to OEM or larger.

Never thought of that actually. Got my friendly MOT tomorrow so hopefully nothing will be mentioned about my oily trunk ;)

Don't worry, won't even be mentioned.
