Which is why they spread so quickly.

The sheer number of iPhones out there mean the scamsters are tapping into an untapped market

I'm not particularly convinced about these security evaluations that put Microsoft at the bottom at products like McAfee near the top.  I've only used Microsoft Forefront and McAfee in large numbers and at one point alongside each other (during the transition period) and much prefer the Microsoft products, not had any outbreaks with it (they've been very quick at updating the definitions when a sample has been provided) and also more importantly it's not been misbehaving with updates or at other times.  McAfee on the other hand could really slow the computer down when it was searching for and applying updates, from time to time it would just go to 100% processor usage and stay there until uninstalled and reinstalled.  More recently I've come across it doing the old Norton trick of blocking network cards completely on installs that have been bundled with the machine (including one of my own machines) which is certainly effective at blocking malware being downloaded but a pain in the neck otherwise.

Microsoft Security Essentials certainly isn't infallible but in my own limited experience from sorting out other people's home machines it doesn't seem any worse at letting malware through.  It is basic in terms of what it offers but I find that appealing as it isn't at all intrusive.  I find the worst cases are when people run their accounts as admin, disable UAC and turn off windows updates (because the prompts are annoying) which is not unusual so they're entirely reliant on the anti-virus which inevitably regardless of the brand can't cope.  Ensuring UAC is enabled, windows updates are up to date and using a non-admin account (particularly for kids so they can trash it all they want) plus disabling exe's from running within the appdata folder means that a lot of malware will never get anywhere close and the AV is a last resort.

The appdata folder is now often used by malware (including the vicious cryptolocker malware) as software can run from there without administrative privileges or a UAC prompt, there is some legimate software (usually browsers) that runs from there but they really should be running from program files since they've been legimately installed.  In the wake of the cryptolocker ransomware, some people have now written tools to block exes from running within appdata which is worth considering.
