Anti virus

Featured Replies

Virginmedia are telling me they are ending their free subscription to anti virus software, and although they are providing a year's cover of something for a year, you automatically have to pay after that.  So do sensible people still use AVG as a free anti virus software? Or is there a better product these days?

Thanks in advance

Adam

IME AVG is rubbish and lets too much past.

What are they providing and how much for?

MS Essentials is good enough, and so is avast.

Avast or comodo :)

Avast along with spybot and spyware blaster, I have never had a virus to date.

Thanks all, I will look at AVAST as you have all mentioned it.  Virgin are offering F-secure or something for 12months on trial then pay.

If you're on windows then just use Microsoft Security Essentials. If on Windows 8 it's already activated in the background.

Been using it since it came out and never had a virus.

Always found other software slowed my old laptop down.

My favourite pastime is to tell people NOT to buy Norton in Currys/PC world right after the staff have done the hard sell on them... lol

Ok thanks will look at that too cheers.  I am on Windows 7 not 8 though.

And yes I recall Norton slowing down an old pc of mine horrendously...

Kaspersky has served me well and withstood the mother in law. If you buy an old version (say 2012) off Amazon then download the latest software from the kaspersky website the licence key in the box will work fine. I got the 3 licence version of kaspersky internet security for about £12 this way.

Microsoft Security essentials is very good.. and free! (as long as your copy of windows is legit!)

I used to use AVG before it became too crap and bloated.

Also keeping your browser up to date is a worthwhile thing to do.. Personally i use chrome, out of habit and because it syncs across all my devices - but even IE11 is very good these days.

I use Kapersky Internet Security this is free if you have a Barclay's Bank account, and it also covers 3 computers and you can update to the latest version when available!

+1 for Avast. All the devices in this house use it, never encountered any problems.

Thanks again all, just installed AVAST - seems very simple.

Cheers

Late to the parade, but I use Avast!!; with MalwareBytes and SpyBot S&D as weekly scans in case anything nasty gets through (no AV program is 100% effective, and it only takes one virus to get through).

Another Avast user here.

Don't forget your firewall - I use Zonealarm (free version).

Isn't Windows firewall sufficient?

I just use Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials and I run Windows 7.

My workplace also uses Microsoft Security Essentials across the corporate network and we have had no cases of virus infection either at home or in the office for almost 2 years now...

Anything else (such as Avast, AVG, Kapersky etc) just seems to slow machines down and get constant pop up ads trying to get you to buy the 'paid for' version which does my head in..

I used to use Avast then I got McAfee for free with my broadband. I moved away from AVG a long time ago when it started causing lots of issues.

MS Security Essentials is actually very good.

Crap as I thought McAfree was it hasn't bothered me that much and so far virus free.

If you want to pay NOD32 is very fast, Kasperski is pretty tough.

As an aside I don't use Outlook for email, and I use Firefox with Adblockplus and NoScript. Those three things probably cut down on viruses and malware more than the antivirus does.

Had this conversation with Gartner recently as we were going to evaluate our AV because MS were offering us their Endpoint Protection (Security Essentials for Enterprise) for free.

Gartner ranked Kaspersky as the best AV on the market with McAfee (our current offering) as second. They actually said the MS solution performs really poorly and lacks many of the features of the big AV players. It will get better, but it would be a bad choice at the moment. Saying that, i have relied on essentials at home for years with no problems.

Ok thanks will look at that too cheers.  I am on Windows 7 not 8 though.

I'm on AVAST, with spybot /rogue killer / Adwcleaner and Windows defender.

Me MSIE and never a problem

Win 7 64 bit

Windows firewall & MS Security Essentials for the last few years and never had a problem.

Comodo for me

Once setup properly it is light and fast on the system and keeps my system in check

Windows firewall & MS Security Essentials for the last few years and never had a problem.

Ditto.

If you all got your selves Mac's you wouldn't need any Anti Virus Software
