Octavia mk1 candles for headlights

lol

Actually it was the lamest thing you ever saw in your life, I guarantee, but I still ended up facing the wrong way, and nudging a wall. On the INSIDE of the bend!!!!

i seem to remember that was only half recently Demonufo... I recall a lot of condolences being sent your broken arse's way :-)

Yep. Few days before my birthday, late July. Sad part is I've STILL got those crappy ditchfinders on the rear, and they make for a VERY interesting ride. Even just crossing the white lines on a dual carriageway... :whew:

I might just put a set of cheapish winter tyres on those veedub wheels and concentrate on refurbing my spiders properly.

Or do I trade them for 17" spiders and refurb those instead...

I've also still got the brand new headlights I was about to fit the very evening that I smashed it, in fact. Must get shot. :giggle:

Correction i use halfrauds extreme brilliance...very good they are too.

shame on you for not getting rid of those tyres!!

Just fitted halfords ultrablue qy76ut.jpg

100W/80W filaments in a headlight with plastic lenses and real skinny wiring looms?

Uh, okaaaaay then...

shame on you for not getting rid of those tyres!!

Yeah, I know. They'll be gone in the next few days, but to be fair, I've mostly been using the bike anyway. Which is equally interesting in this weather...

So none of the illegality, the lightweight wiring, and the fact that you're filtering out some of the light so the bulbholders (metal in plastic) bother you?

Let us know if they melt!

** When they melt...

:)

I have had these in for nearly a year, and have done no harm to my car, they are not great, but just haven't got round to changing them

Heya.

To confirm - with regard to the fitting of 100w / 80w H7 bulbs - I wasn't being 'overkill.'

The fact of the matter is that the standard cabling and switching in our cars is designed for 60w bulbs. The current draw on 100w bulbs is very much higher (just look at the thickness of the filaments compared to 60w bulbs if you want an example) and so by fitting these bulbs, you are trying to draw nearly twice the current through a circuit not designed for it.

At best, you will just have bulbs not operating at the best of their ability (and there is a whole separate thread to be had about running Halogen bulbs with insufficient current - they rely on a re-cycling process of excitable ions withing the sealed gas environment - and if they don't do so, they die an early death) so they won't really be much 'brighter' than 60w bulbs (and quite 'yellow' in their light output), or at worst, as said, will cause a horrendous load on the cabling and fittings, possibly resulting in a bit of a meltdown somewhere.

The fact is that if you want to run 100/80w bulbs TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY, then as I said, you need to make up a simple under-bonnet wiring loom. This means 2x switching relays, switched from the existing hi/lo feeds, and then a high-current feed (with equivalent cabling) from the battery (or a decent power distribution point) to the bulbs and back (or to a decent earth at least). This way, you are giving the 100/80w bulbs the proper current they need to be working at their full 'effing bright' potential, whilst also negating any ill effects on the standard wiring loom.

I'll also close by expanding upon another point another poster made too about getting our headlamps working better. They do fog and yellow up a bit with age, which also diffuses and reduces light output. So recently, I removed my units (a dead easy, 5 minute job for anyone) and used an electric polishing mop and polishing compound on the plastic lenses, finishing off with a manual working of normal bodywork polish - finally sealed with a good quality carnuba wax.

The lenses are all clear, and brightly transparent again now, and the light output and beam definition has improved markedly.

Definitely a little Sunday-afternoon job worth doing guys! :)

Not really no, run these in many different cars over the last 5 years always been ok even used one in an BMW motorbike no ill effects, no melting or scorched wires. As for legalities I run a decat exhaust so not really too bothered, my lights are set up correctly on a beam aligner so not to dazzle. I appreciate Rays input and will look into adding the relays and beefing up the wiring to get more power down to the bulbs.

Well don't ever try them on a V40 or V50. I guarantee you will melt the bejeesus out of it, starting with the plugs themselves.

Volvo does have a history of "thermal events" anyone remember xc90 on watchdog ??

I've used them in a 96 Honda Odyssey, 95 honda civic, 2001 Alfa 146, 2000 merc c250, 98 vw sharan, 99 subaru forester and now the octy.

Ive used them in my cars in the past with no problems

Similarly with a V@*xh@11 C@1!br@, except that they start by melting the bulbholders out of the reflectors; cue £400 bill.

£400 could by a corsa for that.
