Octavia Blackline Satnav

Featured Replies

Anyone tell me if you get a hard copy of the Satnav data when you buy a new Octavia? I have just purchased a 2012 Octavia Blackline 12 months old and want to update the maps and the book seems to indicate that I should have a specific SD card to use but i did not get one.

Cheers

Didn't get anything with mine. I assume you'd get any updates when it's serviced by a main dealer?

I had mine from new, no SD card as the data is held on internal RAM on the head unit. There have been many discussions about updates and the bottom line is that there aren't any available. I think if you have the SD card version of the head unit (non plus version) or VAG equivalent RN310 then there is an update available at around £200.

People have spoken with SUK and even they seem a bit clueless on what is required and if anything is or will be available.

Aldi do a new Skoda Sat Nav update for Amundson+ it's called a 2014 map cheap as chips. It's also updated yearly for about £2.

No you dont get a card.

The Amundsen + was a major improvement over the earlier Amundsen unit (which by and large looks identical). With the Amundsen it came with a map CD, problem is this rendered the CD player unusable if you wanted to use the nav. You were able to copy the CD mapping data to SD card using in-built functionality within the HU itself which freed up the CD slot but then rendered the SD slot unusable (which nowadays its considerably more useful for music given their vastly superior capacity potential).

The + units as well as coming with built in DAB and BT modules (the part shipped in the Blackline does anyway) also has a 4Gb built in storage (probably an on-board SD card). As a consequence the cars came shipped with the maps in memory leaving both the CD and SD slots available for music use.

I understand now and again Skoda release a new version of the maps, you have to buy the SD card as a part from them and as quoted already is in the region of £200 which is extortionate. The card is one time use only I believe and once its updated one unit it cannot be used again.

The updates on the Skoda website are for the MQB based vehicles only (i.e only the Octavia at this time). The new Amundsen has 2 SD slots, one for music and one for nav data. Theres a bit of an issue at the moment that cars are turning up at dealers without the SD cards installed and so the nav is all but useless, cards are now sent to dealers due to thefts of the SD cards at port but there is a massive backlog.

I believe the SD cards for the new Amundsen are specifically formatted in a particular way to a particular size and it is not possible to make a replica yourself (not yet anyway). I believe as soon as the genuine mapping SD is installed in a vehicle the content is electronically locked to that vehicle and cannot be transferred into another vehicle with the Amundsen nav, believe thats the case but may not be entirely correct.

...want to update the maps...

Why???

Its not as though Messers Cameron and Osborne are spending vast sums on new routes!  They are hardly even spending taxes on repairing potholes.

I was just thinking the same thing,in ten years we may have a few more roads. So £200for a update is a complete waste of money.

Whilst I like the convenience of built-in Sat Nav I would not consider it as any inducement to choose a particular vehicle.  It is time the manufacturers got with the technology and provided a decent Sat Nav that included Speed Cameras and useful Traffic info with regular free updates.  Garmin do all this for under £200 - the only drawback is the need to plug it in manually.

Seems as though you dont get a card then. What a price to upgrade the maps. The guy in the local dealer gave a sheet of paper saying that you can also download updates from Tom Tom and install them. As for POI's and speed cameras you can install them on the Satnav but anyone know how to get a warning tone when you approach them? You can send the file to VW in Germany and they convert them and send them back.

From what has been stated on the forum and discussed with SUK, there is no software update for our Amunsden+ head units. The only head unit close is the RNS315 from VW.
