Should my turbo sound like this

Featured Replies

I will make a video of mine from inside the car, sounds very very similar.

Mine only does it when not under load and at low revs.

My standard PD130 sounds like that sort of! Will do a video now as i'm going out

sounds like half a police siren...have you checked for boost leaks ?

Mines doing under load not so bad when driving slowly but if you give a bit of throttle it's there the sound doesn't bother me if it's normal but if it's not then I'll need to speak to the person I got the turbo from

All the work was done by Ali at unit 18 but how would I check for boost leak

Doubt who has done the work has any difference to it. Its the turbo that has the wear already, I would imagine.

If its a used turbo wouldn't be too surprised. Mine also makes similar noises, mind you has done for what 10, 20K miles if not more?

That is the peril of fitting used parts unfortunately, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to just break. Was it a replacement for one that had already failed ?

If its a used turbo and its not lacking power and you havent got clouds of smoke under load i wouldnt worry.

That's kinda of how I feel. I've banked a £160 spare PD130 Garrett for that eventuality (could be a bit noisy too, but servicable at least, I hope). As said 20K probably and still none of the predicted failures yet (touchwood). Ain't broke don't fix it.

sounds like a bus? mine doesn't sound like that

No it's a reconditioned turbo, supposedly I'm going to contact the original seller I think as it shouldn't sound like that I don't think

Any reputable company would inspect a turbo before fitting wouldn't they? Is it down on power or smoking?

  • Author

I'm in contact with the original seller so we shall see it's definitely not right it doesn't seem down on power and no more smoke than usual that I've noticed will keep an eye on it today

I can't see any decent company would fit a turbo without thourougly checking it first. If the bearings were shot there would be obvious play in the shaft so would be pointless fitting tbh and you should have been advised if this was the case before it was fitted. Didnt you check for play in the shaft yourself when you bought the turbo??

  • Author

Wouldn't know how to check for play myself but I'm sure Ali and the guys would have checked that before fitting, I'm trying to get Vcds so I can check boost levels to see if there may be a leak somewhere but I do t think there will be

That's what I say I'm sure they wouldn't fit a turbo with obvious worn bearings/play in the shaft. Out of interest where did you buy this recon turbo? Was it claimeded to be balanced?

It was from Xman750 on here I'm just going to get it double checked to make sure there is no boost leak just for peace of mind then I'll go from there I think thanks for all the replies

Mine sounds like that from inside the car

Are you running over 2psi on that

sounds like a bus? mine doesn't sound like that

Actually yeah mine doesn't sound like that, with mine its more the typical aged "siren" noise particularly in winter in the colder air.....didn't listen to the vid properly first time around its not very loud is it

The sound is more prominent when giving it some

Have you gone from a standard turbo to a hybrid?

As they will differ in sound on boost from my experience ;)

To check for wear the only thing you can do without having the turbo stripped is feel the play in shaft, slight 'side to side' play is ok as the engine oil pressure takes this away once engine is running, 'in/out' play is the one you don't want :)

Yes I've gone hybrid, the car is back at unit 18 and there looking into it for me so hopefully should know soon

Well, the news is the turbo has failed when inspected it is pumping oil into the boost pipe which means either the shaft has snapped or the compressor wheel is knackered, I knew it wasn't right from the off though, I'm get a replacement turbo sent to me on Monday so should receive it Tuesday and hopefully that one will be better
