Hey all, i'm new here.

Ok so today I picked up a 2002 Octavia tdi 110 Elegance and there are a few small problems with it, the main one being the rear door lock on the passenger side rear door appears to be faulty. It doesn't respond to any inputs I make in the central locking (I.e. if I lock the car and this door will remain unlocked whereas all the others will lock). Anyone got any idea as to whats wrong with it and, more importantly, how much it will cost to fix?

The other Fault is that the CD autochanger in the boot doesn't appear to be working, whenever I try to make it play the CD it just comes up on the radio with 'Chk Cassette' or something like that. Anyone got any idea how much this'll be to fix or how to do it?

Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated :)

Regards

Joe

Central locking problems are extremely common on mk1 Octavia's. Do a search on here you'll find loads of info. Door wiring or Microswitch failure in the lock are the most likely cause, if all the other doors are working correctly.

Check for damp around the CD changer, there's a connector there that is prone to getting wet from leaking rear window washer pipework.

Welcome to the forum!

The connector in the water pipe goes under (or around, not sure which) the CD changer.  The trouble is that the connections are rubbish and when the water in the freezes they can split apart.  Next time the unsuspecting owner uses the rear wash/wipe no water comes out (because it's leaking under the CD changer).  If the owner keeps squirting away then it floods and rots the wiring, damages the CD changer etc.  Skoda can fit a set of clips that apparently fix the problem for the rather frightening sum of £120!

I had a similar problem whereby the leak hadn't damaged the CD changer but had rotted the wiring (well, made it short) meaning that the rear boot light no longer worked and the car didn't know the boot was open.  I got my local specialist I go to to sort it, he replaced the wiring and put a clip on the connector so it wouldn't come loose again.  Might be worth checking if your wiring's okay, easiest way is to see if the boot light comes on and that the door open light lights up on the instrument binnacle when the boot is opened (same light that comes on when other doors open).

Might be worth unplugging the connector and seeing what state it's in, if it's corroded then you can bet that's the fault.  Just a case of cleaning the contacts if so.

Oh, and check to see if your rear wash wipe works, as the water comes through the middle of the wiper motor and thus rots the metal, meaning that it packs in.  Mine needed replacing, an easy job but I couldn't be bothered so I got my mechanic to do it for twenty quid plus the cost a new motor from Skoda (about sixty-odd quid).  Don't get a second-hand one if you need to get one as they'll be knackered too.

If it's any consolation the CD player and stereo in the Octavia sound atrocious.  If the worst comes to the worst and you have to replace the changer they only cost about thirty quid on eBay.  If fact, I bet you could get one from one of the people on here, as loads of people have changed the stereo.  It might be worth sticking a "wanted" ad in the classifieds section if you can't get yours working.

It also might be worth finding a good independent VW group specialist to do any work on your car that you can't do, as the Octavia is basically a Golf and thus suffers from all that car's design faults...

fwiw, it don't recommend "securing" or clipping the washer pipe joint.  It is better it pops apart in an easy-to-access location than somewhere much harder to get a (tailgate trim, or elsewhere in the car).  If you use it in the winter and notice the lack of fluid, then you know where to go and check,

I have never used the changer in my car, but are you sure the disks are in the correct way around?

+1 for checking that the discs are in the right way round - it sounds obvious but they go in the other way round to a lot of other CD changers.  I put mine in the wrong way round at first...

Good point on the pipe too.  I hadn't thought of that.

Hi there,

I have a Skoda Octavia Tour TDI 1.9. My car was recently repaired from a front and back accident. I was still and got hit from behind and the impact made me crash in front, as there was traffic. The fixed the boot, but now when I close my boot, the open boot light on my dashboard stays on, regardless. Sometimes the light works, and sometimes it doesn't even though I am certain that the boot is properly closed. Should I check the plugs? I don't know exactly where they are on the car. Was thinking of spraying contact cleaner on the plugs, or even on the sensor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

I'd take it back to whoever did the repair at first - it should have been put back to the condition that it was in before, i.e. with the the boot light working properly.  It sounds like they might not have plugged a connector plug all the way in, meaning that the connection is intermittent.  Not sure where the connectors are though (and I can't check for you as I haven't had mine for three years, I still miss it!)
