Detailing obsession

Interesting thread and   to KBPhoto for using his car as a guinea pig.

AW is definitely not a long term wax. I had a bit of spare time at work the other week so thought I'd try it out. Barring a snow foam, car had a good wash over, so I tried the AW. It's an easy product to use as you don't need to dry the car, and the results gave a pretty good shine for something that is very much a wipe on wipe off product.

Yesterday the car had a very quick wash and dry and although the beading is still there you can see that it is starting to wear off.

Ideal for a quick blast over, but something else is needed - now when will this poxy rain stop so I can spend some serious hours on the driveway

I just applied some Wolfs Body Wrap to my daughters car...it promises much....

How did you get on with that?

Is it quite fussy in terms of ambient temp when applied, etc?

I got one of the Meguiars winter paint restoration kits cheap before Christmas, so I'll be valuing and polishing the car before waxing it next time.

Detailing obsession

When I get the toothbrush out to clean around the windscreen, then I'll know I'm 'obsessed'.

Cotton Wool buds are safer

You'll like Body Wrap Chris - moves the game on I think

Been using it my wheels for a while but not on paintwork until now on another car (Daughter's)

We will see what it performs like

I shall see how that compares to mine with Bilt Hamber Hydra Wax applied on the same day

No. Not at all....Temperature was 8C ...ish when applied

Seven weeks on and it's still working.

Just.

There doesn't seem to be that much difference between the ArmorAll and the other two areas. A slightly better bead and runoff, but not enough for someone who didn't know to be certain there was something different.

Would this be an expected lifespan for a sealant without any topping up?

Should it be topped up each month for best protection?

Changing direction a bit: I'm about to get some parts of the car resprayed (it's diamond silver 9102).

What should I do to the new parts in order to protect them as best I can? I'll use the same on the whole car after I've polished and valued it.

Would ArmorAll shield be a 'pretty good' thing to use?

For me, the key element for sealant duration is the condition of what it's applied to. So there might be an element of that at play here?

I tend to use Jeff's Prime as a sealant, as part of a detailing process. And although that's then added to with quite a few layers of wax protection on top, I would expect the sealant to protect the paint, and bead, for many months.

If ArmorAll are marketing that as a 'shield' it needs to be an awful lot better than what you've found during the trial.

Fair comment about the condition of the paintwork.

Mine hasn't been polished or clayed since I've had it and, as it was a company car prior to that, I doubt it ever has been.

They may also be an element of me applying too much in one go. I've read that 'less is more' and it should be applied sparingly.

As I stated in an early post I used two sample packs on less than one half of the bonnet and did end up wiping quite a bit off on the polishing cloths.

Are you testing after a wash with a gentle shampoo? Or just as it is?

Surface dirt will impede beading but I would expect a good LSP to return to as new functioning at this point, have Shield in mind as I type this.

Another fair point if forgotten about.

I haven't washed it this last fortnight but will do so when I get a chance and report back if the beading improves.

As Steve says, a dirty car will lose more than half the beading effect of a freshly washed car, providing that the Protection is still working of course

In short, you cant tell until the car is washed

Sorry i thought you were quoting my comment on washing :(

Hello :)

Another fair point if forgotten about.

It's all good research this, and interesting to see

If you were doing further tests, I'd be interested to go one step further and clay down a test area, then apply.

I think I'll be keeping the car for another year or do, so come early spring I'll probably polish & clay & seal the car...

What to use though as I'm not going to keep trying new stuff?

Plenty of good, tested products out there if you're going to polish and clay, then seal.

All three of us on this thread will probably recommend different products though :D
