2013 or 2014? What would you do?

Featured Replies

I ordered my VRS estate TSI back in the first week of August. Late yesterday I received a great call from my dealer confirming my car was now built and had arrived in the UK. He reckons (but no guarantee) it could be ready for Christmas.

So the dilemma is, do I collect just before Christmas, or wait just that little bit longer and ask the dealer to register the car as a 2014, and then collect?

I've waited 4 months and I am really excited that its finally getting close to getting my VRS....but what would you do?

Wait and register 2014... unless you think it will spoil your Christmas by not relaxing!

Are you trading in?

The dealer may reduce your trade in value if you elect to wait.

Not sure it makes a huge amount of difference either way.

Nope, not trading in.

Push for the new year then if you can, it will make a couple of hundred difference come trade in time.

But it'll be on the same year plate if you get it before or after - the changeover is March 1st.

Get it before Christmas, then you can enjoy doing the last minute food shopping ;)

I'd get it straight away, as said above the plate year will be exactly the same. I hated the wait for mine and there was no way I'd want to make the wait any longer than necessary.

A 2014/63 will be worth more than a 2013/63 when the time comes to sell the car, so if you can wait a little longer then I I would.

I'm actually in the same boat as I have a new car available this next week, but I'm fighting temptation and uptil now I've decided to wait

I will be having a private plate, so no issues there. Just thinking of an easier resale a few years down the line when I can advertise the car as a 2014 instead of a 2013. Decisions, decisions. Still can't decide what to do.

I'd wait.

All Octavia's built from around August are 2014 cars anyway so waiting a few weeks to register it isn't really going to mean anything, come resale it's going to little to no difference.

If we're buying a used car I'd chose the one in the best condition with the right spec' over one that's a few week newer.

My one is leaving the factory on the 23 Dec

register should be Jan 2014..  please Mr Skoda dealer   :giggle:

It's just a numberplate!

It's just a numberplate!

It's not even that as it'll be still be a 63 plate.

It will be valued very slightly higher as a 2014 registered 63, but not by much, at the most £200 I would have thought. Perhaps what is more important is when do you want any finance payments to be made, around the 18th if you collect in December, or around 28th if you collect 1st Jan?

You might be surprised andyvee. Your dealer will use Glass guide to give you a guide as discretion appears to have been largely removed from sales people.  I don't have Glass's but Parkers guide lists the following p/x values for a VRS estate:

2010/60 - £11395

2011/60 - £12575

So £1200. Now, that could make the wait a tad more bearable?

Wow, the problem is they will price more on mileage, and the difference between an early 2010/60 and a late 2011/60 will be 5000 miles, which will have more of a bearing on the screen price. The difference of a few hundred miles over the year break will have more impact on the price of the later car, as it will be a high mileage example, whereas the earlier car will be a low mileage.

Good point. It's worth checking in more detail. Perhaps the OP has done this? The examples above were with 20k and 30k miles. Skoda charge 7.2 pence a mile so logically, you'd expect a difference for the 5000 miles you mention to equate to no more than £360. This would mean pocketing over £900 by waiting till January. However, this is only on paper. Who knows what would happen reality.  It would seem logical though that a 2014/63 plate would command a higher price than a 2013/63. Lots of websites list in this way so a buyer may be drawn to 2014 model even though it could be just a few days newer than a 2013 one.

£1,200.................Surely that is for the worst case though at 6 months apart (eg Mar 1st-Aug 31st).

Therefore other people on this thread have probably hit the nail on the head. Wait till January and probably take a hit around £200 come resale time. Are you really that bothered ? I say get it for Xmas and enjoy !!

I don't think that the actual date has as much bearing as the banding ie 2013/63 or 2014/63. I believe that dealers use a fairly unscientific table that puts emphasis upon which category it fits in to and then make slight tweaks. I suppose the only way to check is to browse for one registered December 2010 and January 2011 and see if you feel the difference is worth the wait.

I know what I'd do...patience was never my strong point but I thought it worth putting the other point across. I'd be really interested to find out what the OP decided. Please do tell.

I'd take delivery yesterday.... Unless you're going to wait until March, I can't see it making much difference, but then, why not wait until August.... 2019...  You can go on forever.

Agreed.

i'm in similar position and am waiting to 1 Jan - if no financing issues it will look better when you sell in my view

Why though?  If I was to buy a car, surely you'd only be looking at the plate?

Mileage, plate and condition are surely much more significant factors?

^^^agreed on all above....but for 2 weeks wait if it makes a marginal positive/difference for resale it's fine by me...
