Need Help In Specing A New Superb

Featured Replies

Hi I'm getting to the point of ordering a new L&K Superb but I need some advice on some of the options.

In general I'm a rep who does about 20000 miles per year mostly motorways but also a fair bit of town driving, but after driving a 140DSG and 170DSG spec car I can't decided after a couple of shortish trips if the 170 is worth the extra costs involved, any opinions from owners would be most welcome.

The other questions I have is the keyless entry worth getting or is it just a gimmick? Is the hill start thing useful and finally the MDI can it charge and control Android phones such as Samsung Galaxy 3?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Cant comment on the 140 but having come from a 90bhp car the 170 seemed far too powerful.

I carry a lot of weight often so the 170 is possibly more economic than the 140 would be but no one can know without a scientific controlled test.

My mpg range is 47 with average load and I think can be as low as 42 with a full load.

I wouldn't have keyless if it was free, having twice had to rescue someone who had driven away with the key outside the car but in range.

(mazda) perhaps the skoda is better at warning you the key is no longer in range?

I wish my car had hill hold, never had an auto before and was shocked it could roll back down a hill.

Don't have mdi and cant see the point,  nokia lumia 920 connects automatically and streams music without touching anything, the phone sits on the cup holder cover snuggly too, though I have added a windscreen mounted wirless charging dock which I don't use.

May have specced heated screen and washers if my car had not been ex demo.

The L&K seems to have all the most important stuff apart from tow kit if needed.

rear camera would be fun but not an option for superb AFAIK (as far as I know)

Any other questions just ask

Thanks for the reply, I think you are right about the keyless entry thing as to hill hold on Mercs you just push down harder on the brake and it goes into HOLD mode which makes it much easier to control the car in places like Muswell Hill!

I couldn't see the point of MDI either so that's more money saved.

The 140 seemed pretty quick when I drove it, but I didn't feel the 170 was that much more powerful or quicker.

Having experience of a 140DSG Passat estate, I think the 140 is a bit smoother and less peaky in it's delivery, but the real world MPG figures are not that different as far as I understand. For me the extra poke of the 170 makes it more relaxing to drive especially when loaded, and as I am not a business user the tax implications are irrelevant. I have hill hold on my manual Superb and it works really well, I would definitely have the heated screen and washers (although see the thread on this on the Octavia forums-not everybody gets on with them!)

I have the MDI and whilst I can't comment on the charging of the phones you mention, I do use it with a small hard drive for my music and it works seamlessly

If you are ordering a new car with DSG I would say hill hold is a must. I ordered a 170DSG without hill hold and find it borderline dangerous rolling back. I have now enabled it with VCDS and the car is much better

U mean hill control can be added just by VCDS?

No physical parts required?

I am driving 225 HP / 460 Nm car now, so 170 HP / 350 Nm option was the only I was considering. When testdriving it - it was not so bad. Of course 110 Nm difference is felt when overtaking.

I've never driven auto box longer than for several hours, so I had no idea about hill hold. But reading many threads on hill hold issue - I am still not sure is it good or not. Some Skoda or VW drivers complaining on strange behaviour of hill hold when driving backwards to a slope. So I think I will try how it is without it - there is handbrake in worst case...

MDI for me was a must, because I listen music from USB.

Not sure wot new L&K have.

But yes - deffo heated front windscreen!

I actually disabled my headlamp washers off - empties the washer bottle too fast! Eeeek!

Privacy rear glass

Sunroof

Bluetooth

Satnav

Electric rear blinds

Adaptive headlamps

Electric boot (combi estate)

MDI socket/cable

Leather seats

In regards to the music, am I right in thinking that the cars Hard Drive will hold 30Gb and is there any limit to the size of SD card that you can use?

I think 30Gb and say 16Gb card would be plenty for me.

So on top of the L&K stuff I think I will go for electric boot & Hill control and forget about Keyless

Only 18GB in my hard drive ...

My manual says up to 32GB for SD card.

Latest Columbus can take a 32Gb SDHC card. Just make sure you get a black one, otherwise it just looks odd.

I have an Pre FL L&K with an Electronic Boot and to be honest it can be a bit of a pain just in the length of time it takes to open and close. As long as you are not in a rush you will be okay :)

Certainly would recommend the heated windscreen option although don't think you've escaped scraping the windows as you still have to do the side ones.

Again I personally would go for MDI as it gives you more flexibility in what you can listen to. Bluetooth does work but you can be limited on the controls of the Bluetooth device.

Hill hold I don't have but would have specced if I had bought the car brand new.

The other thing you might consider is the DAB upgrade for the Columbus. I think it's £150 but will daze you loads of time in the future. If it is like the Passat one it flips between the two fm and dab.

Tow bar prep and dog guard were two of the other things I added but these were done by the dealer.

Good luck

Sometimes I do regret buying the 140, as it can feel a little under-powered and inflexible. If I had my time again I would prob go for the 170: the mpg and VED numbers aren't so different now.

Probably true for some devices like fruit based.

With windows phone 8 (without rsap) I can fast forward, skip, pause, and Columbus displays track name and info.

(you can also reply to text messages via voice/bluetooth with these phones

Not an expensive option so add it anyway, don't have to use it.

For me I chose:

Sunset glass - makes the car more elegant looking IMO

Heated screen and washers - no more scraping the front screen

Park assist - only a bit more expensive than front sensors

Electric tailgate - wonderful, its open when I reach the car (does it really matter how fast it opens providing it is open when you get there??)

Spare wheel - would not be without one.

Variable boot floor - essential if you want / need a flat load area.

I do not regret speccing any of the options I chose, whats more there is nothing missing from the list that I wished I had included.

As for the MDI, personally I find the SD card more than adequate for all my music.

On the current L&K most of the stuff is already speced (Park assist, DAB radio, heated windscreen, sat nav)

I agree I think the SD card will be enough for me as I have no intention of streaming music from my phone, or answering text messages as I'm far too old for that stuff!

But I think that it sounds like Hill Hold is worth getting as for me is the electric boot opening.

Its then just a case of the 140 or 170 powered car to be decided.

You really need to drive them both, I tried the 140 (in a Yeti as it was too new to find one in a Superb) and I felt it was lacking (coming from a 130PD Superb) I then tried a 170 DSG Superb estate and this confirmed two things:

1/ I wasn’t having the DSG - the car I drove was very jerky when it went into 1st and reverse.

2/ The 170 is also too linear in the power delivery for my liking (it feels too flat and uninspiring for my liking)

So I opted for the 170 remapped by Shark.... it is then a different beast and soooo much nicer to drive!

L&K?

Estate?

DSG?

Surely there can't be many more boxes to tick? Just tick em' all!!

170 all the way!!!! Lol

The fuel economy is pretty much the same AFAIK between the 170 and 140 which is another consideration but I'm not overly familiar with the DSG boxes having said that.  The spec for the L&K here in Ireland varies slightly (I think we get keyless but not ventilated seats) but I do have KESSY and if was an option I wouldn't bother with it.  Only using it a few weeks but find myself searching for places to throw the keys when you get into the car etc and generally no real benefit.  Sunset does set off the car.  I did specify the wood effect dash inserts (as opposed to piano black) and also changed to wheels to all silver (instead of bi-colour) but that was just personal choice really and happy I went with them.  What interior colour have you gone for?

Just bought a new l&k superb Jan 2014. The only options available are hill hold, mid, spare wheel, heated washer nozzles, sunroof, 3 spoke steering wheel if you want paddles,

The rest of the addons talked about is standard on the 2014 model.

Hill hold a must if you are used to an auto. Helped me today I am so used to 2.5 tdi. Yes you can simply use the hand brake but easy to forget after 7 years of auto box.

MDI for me not needed.i phone connects and works. Plenty of space for mp3 on the hard drive.

Down to personal Taste and choice. Go for the 170 I did not regret it.

Enjoy
