Just did my cambelt

Featured Replies

Just finished doing my belt and it is making a small quiet whining noise. Is it under too much tension?

they do wine if they are to tight yes, Should be an automatic tensioner though i think?

before ripping it all to bits check it isnt the aux belt wineing

good point it could be the aux..how do I check which?

Don't think cam is auto is it?

To check if its aux belt, just spray a tad of wd40 on the belt as its running. If it stops making the noise, then you know the aux belt (or aux component) is the culprit.

not sure about wd? i normally just pour some water on the belt but pretty much same process

I use belt spray or wd40, whichever is closest to hand.

If you reaallllyyyy! Want to be sure, just take the aux belt off and start it :)

Ok cool but it only happens when I rev it that's the problem! Might have to whip off the aux. Can anyone remember how exactly to double check the timing on vcds too? Slightly paranoid it's a tiny fraction out because it feels a little slower! Idle is ok though

Yes, the cambelt sounds too tight if the whine increases with RPM, it isn't really a big problem, just annoying as hell unless it's MUCH too tight of course. How did you set the belt tension?

Yes, the timing will likely have shifted slightly unless you actually corrected it after fitting the new belt, that's why the cam pulley mounting holes are slotted.

I wouldn't say it's much too tight as the whine is barely noticeable. It was set by using a hex key in the tensioner and lining up the arrow within the groove then tightening up the nut to hold the tension.

Right not sure on that bit as we loosened the three nuts to get the belt on and tightened them up when it was in place.

If anyone can advise on how I check the timing on vcds that would be great!

So you didn't check the actual belt tension? Then it's probably a little tight but will quieten down in due course.

Your cam timing is definitely out since you didn't re-time it after running the engine.

Is your nickname 'half-the-job' by any chance?  :hi:

Did you definitely turn the tensioner the right way, there is an arrow on it if it's turned the wrong way they will overtighten the belt and quickly fail too.

Remove the aux belt and see if the noise goes first

Definitely turned it the right way following the guides on this site and the manual.

Wouldn't call it half a job being the fact that the guide was followed.

Did you just replace the belts or did you use a full kit with replacement tensioner and pulleys?

I ask as if the belt is changed without replacement idlers/tensioner, sometimes these items will rapidly fail under the increased tension of a new belt.

Got the full kit from Skodaparts.com Bickerton Skoda..all in for about £90..!

Yep that's the one..good guys!

Have you checked the top plastic belt cover is located correctly with the bottom lug on the outside of the bottom cover, it may be catching the belt ?

This is possibly a problem..does it look like the timing is out?

When I did mine, in the Meas blocks - 08, then click up into Group 004, and in the 4th window (Torsion Value) I set it to 0.00.
