Scratches in paint work

Featured Replies

Hi!

A few days ago I had the unfortunate event of a couple of chavs trying to carjack me! Luckily I was able to drive off but one of them jumped on to the side of the car, grabbing the roof rails (I have the estate vRS) and in doing so has left two very faint scratches on offside rear passengers door. One of the scratches I can just about 'feel' in one place with my finger nail.

I went in to Halfords and they sold me some 'T-Cut Color Fast' in blue (car is Racing Blue). I'm a bit concerned about using it as I understand it has a 'gentle' abrasive and I know the paint work is lacquered and I don't want to cause any further damage but at the same time dont't want to spends hundreds of pounds getting it rectified.

As always I'd appreciate any advise or experiences you've had. Thanks Peter

I'd get a proper scratch repair place to look at it. Probably won't cost more than £100. T-cut is a chemical abrasive and can be hard to apply precisely. You risk wearing through the scratch to the primer layer...

Do not use it.

If there is paint missing and you are through the laqcuer the paint removing more with cutting compounds does not help matters.

(Nothing Gentle about it, just abrasive.)

?? Have you tried using Wax & then polished the area and seen how it looks?

Maybe post a picture of what you have now.  Someone can maybe advise.

Possibly price up a Smart Repair,  Chips Away or a similar Mobile Repairer or a Local Body shop.   Hopefully not Hundreds of pounds.

Hi Chris, I'll get some tomorrow in daylight. Thanks Pete

Sounds polish'able, if not wet sand'able.   :)   I would only trust a competent person to wet sand though as risky business.

Didn't think car jacking really happened any more in this country....

Just two teenagers wanting money came up to my window when parked in a car park. Told then no and started to drive off, they tried opening the doors but luckily they were locked and then jumped on the side of the car - pretty scary TBH!

My exact sentiments Jason..You do need someone who knows what theyre doing :)

Blimey... sorry to hear about this! - care to share more info? (im in manchester too)

^^^^ what Colin said, people are seeming to take this as ok... WTF is our country comming to... its not ok to "try to be carjacked" , have they been reported to the police, have they been caught? told local newspapers?

dont get me wrong, I'm glad you are ok , but we need to be shocked by this, not passive.....

cant edit

edit: just read the thread, ok , we know its not "OK" , but I still wish we could stand up and do something about this sort of behaviour..... those scags, need some way to show them this is not ok.....

You need to find a safer location to buy your medicinal from ;-))))

Where are you? Happened in Cheadle-Hulme near where I live.

Believe me I didn't take it passively; it's been reported to the Police but frankly I don't think there's much that could be done!

Thanks for the concern though!

Did you have the doors locked? (good advertisement for the auto-locking feature!!!)

I drive thru there quite regularly.. :/

Hi Chris,

The scratch on the left I can just about feel towards the bottom where it gets a bit deeper. The one on the right and towards the top of the bigger one I can't feel anything.

Thanks for your help, Pete

Edit: To give you an idea of scale, the bigger scratch is around 100mm in length

scratch 5

scratch 4

scratch 3

scratch 2

scratch 1

If the above fails (not saying that it will) then give me a call, cheers Stu :-)

Jesus. Sorry to hear this. I think id of been tempted to drive back round n run em over. Might of got you a few more scratches, but the satisfaction would be worth it! Lol.

A couple of those look like there are patches of quite pale/white which could be the primer layer.  If so, the best you could hope for on those bar a respray of the panels, is to touch in, and wet sand back to try and improve things.

Any luck with the scratch removal ???

Long story short - no! However currently in negotiations with dealership as car is faulty (high engine oil consumption) so it could be going back to them anyway...
