Its time !

Wife has decided the panasonic vi era 50 plasma is costing too much kW to run so we / she wants a more Eco friendly tv instead, LCD or led which is best ? And anyone using the latest LG models as I'm looking at one of those , with wifi and Bluetooth

Switch off something else, Panasonic plasma really has the best picture quality. Keep plasma and buy some led lamps for the house to compensate.

I agree with Kenny, replace some of your internal lights for LED lights.

LED lights typically use 90% LESS energy than a standard equilivent bulb of a similar 'wattage/lumens'.

Are these bulbs cheaper to run than normal energy efficient ones ?

Blimy- i'm still using a panasonic TX 32 PM1, WIDESCREEN CRT TV. It's got one distinct advantage- it's theft proof. Any yob trying to take this away will be seen by A & E for a hernia. But it's only 86W consumption -that means almost 12 hours viewing to use one unit. Then there's all this talk about replacing perfectly good stuff with low power gear. How much anti green consumption would it take to replace my old TV with a new one. It's like comparing an old car ,made in the 60's with a Prius. The prius might be greener to run, but ancient one cost less ( greenwise ) to make and certainly to dispose of. How much green energy did it cost to make the batteries . Then there's lights. In our kitchen we could have a light bar with two 50w GU10 and two LED, but we'd need to switch on the under cupboard lights ( 60 w) to Safely prepare on the worktop. What price a mangled fingure on a badly lit worktop. And the NHS cost of treatment. The problem is that today, we have "experts" advising on lighting, without any safety qualifications, or knowledge of light output or needs. It's similar to what happened earlier on our roads- and we're now paying for that.

Factor in the cost of a quality replacement LED and it's going to take centuries to recoup the difference. Tell the Mrs that the plasma saves on heating bills too, LEDs don't get very warm.

But it's only 86W consumption

I have a last generation 32" TX CRT (I forget the exact model number) and the manual says 50 watts - 0.1 Watts on standby. It almost certainly uses less than the 50 Watts quoted as I use a home cinema set up and not the internal speakers.

Thinking about it, 86 might be the weight in lbs!!!

Lol until recently we still had a 32" widescreen CRT. It was ancient but still put out a good picture. I called it our 3D tv since it was as deep as it was wide.

I think I'd go LED as a compromise between picture quality and power consumption. Until the price of big OLEDs drops lots anyway.

we have quite a large house and alot of electrical devices.

We had a samsung 42" Plasma TV and switched it for a Samsung 42" LED Tv - Electrical wise there isnt much saving to be had.....

I could of replaced 4 of the bulbs with LED lights in our roof light and saved the same amount of money without the £550 price tag on the new LED tv  :wall:

So i went out and bought a pack of 40 LED bulbs for 120£ and replaced all the downstairs and landing, Bathroom, 2 bedrooms with them. Ill try give you our guestimate for our costs

Halogens costed around £280 a year for 55W versions

New LEDs have been in a year and have so far cost around £23, If you price into account the cost of them it woud be £143 for the year so thats a saving of £137 this year!

Hope this helps

I replaced the CFL bulbs (11W) with LEDs ones (3W) in the kitchen (8 bulbs in total), the wife didn't like them so I took them back and still using the CFLs. The LEDs were way more expensive as well..  So if you are thinking of switching to LEDs you should try them first.

I swapped from a Plasma TV to LCD/LED backlit TV, the picture on the new one is OK after a lot of tinkering in the advanced settings, out of the box it was awful. but the plasma was still better. If you like watching TV, then switching from Plasma maybe something you come to regret.

I'd look at savings elsewhere first.
