Excessive fuel consumption..

Anything I should check or look out for?

It used to to be ok on fuel but seems to burn it at an alarming rate just recently. Wasn't sure if there was anything specific that could cause it

I haven't got one myself but what sort of figures are you getting now and previously? Have your driving habits changed or the type of journeys you do changed either. Is it just you driving the car or does someone else share the car. As it' starting to get colder the engine will take longer to warm up so will have poorer consumption while it does- could this be a contributing factor? Have you changed fuel brand?

More info will help those with a simlar car to be able to give you some ideason what to look for ifthere issomething wrong with your car.

Expect 20% fall in mpg due to cold weather. If its much more than this then you have a problem.

Nothing's changed drastically, not to cause this anyway. I'm sure the coolant temp sensors failing which in the earlier 1.8ts causes issues, is it the same for the mk2?

I recently changed the charcoal filter and PCV on my tfsi and noticed a slight increase in mpg.

Air filter blocked? Easy to check.

Tried to look yesterday quickly but felt like I was going to break something, any tips now it's light I'll have a proper look

It might help if you give indicated figures for comparison?

No figures to compare but it's worse than my old vr6 was.

I put £20 in and it gave 120 miles on the comp readout, I did prob 20 miles steady driving and ended up with 60 miles on the readout. It's rubbish. I'm sure it wasn't this bad when we 1st got it, I've only just started driving it regularly tbh. The wife used it as her daily so she wouldn't really notice bit I have.

Trying to use the predicted range as a judge of fuel economy is hopeless. Ignore it completely.

Look at the average mpg over a full tank (trip 2). Better yet measure the economy yourself by filling the tank till the pump clicks off, resetting the trip computer, then the next time you fill up do so again till the first click. Note the volume of fuel put in, and then used the distance since you last filled up to calculate the mpg. Use www.fuelly.com if you don't want to do the calculation.
