Change of plan: Used diesel VRS or used Golf GTD

If the rear tyres were making a rumbling sound like a wheel bearing then that is normally a sign of the rear tyres sawtoothing (search the forum, there will be loads of topics about it) which means that the geometery is wrong and the car will need 4 wheel alignment and geometery check carried out (about £100) to solve that.

I'll enquire a about this, looks like i have some reading to do! Thanks

  • I recently had the same decision to make and the VRS and GTD were high on my list. I discounted the Scirocco as I think it's design is starting to date, I also looked at and discounted the 3-Series as

  • This one has xenon's, is diesel, DSG, low mileage and under budget. A little old though on a 59.   It says sat nav but it looks like the standard Bolero head unit to me...   http://www.autotrader.

I wasn't sure about maxidot either Stu, but isn't the light one of test lights which come on when the ignition is first turned on (e.g. battery, handbrake etc.)

Having a think about it over tea I think that it might be the door ajar warning since it doesn't have maxidot. Cars without maxidot only get a light rather than the display telling you which door is open. I might be wrong but it would make sense.

That seems to make sense. What a bummer! Both cars without maxidot, bit of a dealbreaker for me

Well back to the drawing board with my search!!

Thanks for your help

I know the grey one is a fair distance from you but it looks a really nice example.  ;)

Re Maxidot, how can you tell from the picture?

I've done a bit of detective work on the internet to try and get a better picture of the interior of the car in question and i have found a slightly clearer picture on autotrader. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201312240678851/sort/locasc/usedcars/colour/blue/make/skoda/postcode/ct11yy/model/octavia/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/keywords/vrs/page/1/radius/1500?logcode=p

If you look at the display between the speedo and rev counter you will see (not very clearly) the time is displayed at the top left corner of the display and the writing in the display is like the writing on a calculator or digital clock. On the maxidot the time is top centre of the screen and the display is a lot finer for the lack of a better word. If you look at these pictures they will tell the story a lot better than me.

HTH :)

You can still fit bt without maxidot but it limits the module choice and functionality. However, you can still do calls over the head unit, including showing the phone book, and streaming music, using a 5K0 or 7P6 module.

What you can't do is connect in premium mode and get texts over the heads up display or construct them on the head unit, or use internet. Very easily arguable that it is no bad thing really!!

Because we are all Skoda nerds! :-)

But seriously, Maxidot just looks like a more upmarket display in the centre of the instrument binnacle, difficult to describe really.

I would imagine finding a manual WITH maxi dot will be fairly difficult, as unless people were 'in the know' about maxi dot then not many would of ticked the box for it, hence why I ordered a DSG as it gave both maxi dot AND the multifunction wheel as standard, then since I had the DSG I have never looked back.

There will be one out there for you, but its going to take detective work to get the one you really want :-)

I have most of this functionality in my Superb and really would not want to be without this. Thanks Adam

One dealer I spoke with told me that maxidot was standard on VRS, which is why I did not ask about it! Well that's me told then.

How about one of these? Not sure on the full spec on them but they both have maxidot and as far as I can see your budget is £15k and it can't be older than 5 years old.

Had seen those models, the silver one does not have xenons (which i have on my superb and they are great) or any parking sensors from what I can see. Plus I'll have to spend for the MFSW retrofit 7 Sat nav

The other one in Swansea I may have to consider, but iirc he may not come down in price by much - I need to budget £1000k for the MFSW, and SatNav/bluetooth.

Or I could look for a DSG, which I am not too keen on. Do they last well with a DTUK chip on? have read that the DSG box can be slow to respond?

Thanks for all your help chaps

have viewed a blackline DSG TDI and driven it, and like it very much. Shame it had silver wheels not black!

This did not have bluetooth, but it is there on the satnav unit.  (£16500)

Should I go for the DSG with MFSW, or blackline non DSG and do a retrofit? (£16000)

Do the retrofits actually work ok?

I think if it is a Blackline it has an Amundsen it has bt already and just needs activating. See the link earlier in the thread....

The Blackline also has other extras as standard I believe.

I thought that the Blackline only came with black alloys?

You will need vcds to activate the bt module in the amundsen and purchase a mic kit so the person on the other end of the phone can hear you.

Mic kit: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/274292-blackline-bluetooth-kit-loom-mic/

Install guide: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/252899-amunsden-plus-bluetooth-and-microphone-install-how-to/

Is it the black car at Motorline?

Shame it doesnt have the black wheels, they are a question of taste for some people and know my dealer had a non Blackline car with black wheels that they swapped with silver alloys in order to sell it....wierd in my opinion as the neptunes look rather boring in Silver but thats just my opinion.

The BT retrofit is easy as pie on a Blackline, requires coding and the correct mic and wiring loom kit (there is a thread on this forum as a how to with all the info required) and apart from having to take the passenger B pillar cover off, removing the dash trim and headunit and dropping the glovebox (not 100% necessary but makes the job easier overall) its v much plug and play.

It cost me 80 quid in all to get the coding done by a VAG specialist and a mate to buy and install the mic (as didnt trust myself to pull apart a car with 200 miles on the clock) but reckon I could do the install myself now.

Its great, get full maxidot integration and control via the MFSW in the Blackline, just you dont get voice control which is no great loss. You also get full BT audio streaming with track title, skip/seek etc which works great.

Only question is why Skoda didnt install the mic and code it from the factory, would have added pennies to the build and made the cars even more desirable, think they missed a bit of a trick!

Dont forget rear parking sensors also

Yes it is that one, drove it 15mins or so and really liked it. However, the wheels are not to my taste, and no heated seats, on leather a must for me, especially for those freeziing mornings soon to come!

The dealer did have £1000 knocked off the £17995 and would come down to £16500 - on the phone prior to driving it I offered £16000, and they said it would be very near to it, but he wouldn't budge from £16500, so I decided to mull it over.

In the meantime, a fellow briskodian replied to my wanted add and has a fully spec'd VRS manual, with MFSW, parking sensors front & rear, heated seats, adaptive xenons with auto lights, autodimming rear view mirror, columbus, alacantara black with red stitching 2012 with 33k on the clock. Looks in top notch condition from the pics I have seen, and for much less than £16500!!

So needless to say, I will be going for that viewing next weekend and hopefully buying if all goes well!!  Did not plan on spending more than £15k, so so far so good!

Thanks for all your help chaps

Actually quick question, I have 2009 columbus in my superb, and am able to read text messages in the maxidot, Do newer versions read the messages out now?

Sounds good. Yes I have read the very new modules do this provided your phone can connect appropriately and dependent on the head unit. But I expect you need to be in rSap mode, which Iphones for example don't support.

That car sounds like a goer-the spec is very good.

  • Author

Probably wont happen then on a 2012 unit

Thanks Adam

Probably not, but the modules can be swapped easily and relatively cheaply (and you can sell the other).  As the wiring will be present it really is less than a 5 minute job, plus some possible VCDS coding.

Just what I was after, 23 months old with warranty until March 2015, race blue with nearly every extra, 33k miles, and in excellent condition with the interior more or less in showroom condition

Bought off fellow briskodian Keith lard so thanks Keith!

Now waiting for the frost to clear so I can start my detailing!

Thanks for everyones help to get to get me to this point - superb to VRS!

Paul

I do love a story with a happy ending! :)

  • Author

Well was a very happy ending, spent 6 hrs today cleaning the inside and out, interrupted by tree surgeons next to my drive chopping an adjacent tree only to cover my car in sawdust!!

Anyway, all clean now, but did not risk claying as it looked like rain and i wanted to get 2 lots of carlack on it. which I just completed before it rained.

Now, on my superb, my blackberry 9230 connected without any problems on a 2010 columbus, but I am having a right mare connecting to this VRS.

The columbus hardware is H08, Sw 5320, maps 7918, with the bluetooth module under the drivers seat. This was installed by the previous owner.

When connecting, I only get a 6 number pin, vs the 16  on my superb. The connection is made then fails with the message "connection not possible"

I have trawled the columbus threads and tried everything going, but still unable to connect.

Could this be down to the bluetooth module? or any other ideas?

I cannot change my phone as it's a work phone

Thanks
