Change of plan: Used diesel VRS or used Golf GTD

Featured Replies

Right, now that Skoda is no longer a choice on my company car list, I have decided to take the car allowance and fund either a VRS or GTD.

I don't want to go new as I would like to pay off the car within 24-36 months and then pocket my monthly car allowance which should be around £320 after tax.

I should be saving around £230 per month company car tax on my 59 plate Superb also.

I have had a look online at used VRS's but have a few questions:

Do the steering wheel controls for audio etc only come with the DSG versions?

I have seen a few with headlamp washers too, but these seem to be random - is there a particular spec for this? Also, are the headlamps adaptive as in my current superb?

What mpg's are you getting from  the DSG versions?

Does the VRS have coming home lights, downlights on mirrors, voice activated sat nav for >2011 models?

What will the build quality be like compared to my Nov 09 Superb Elegance?

I am looking in the region of £16000k for the VRS with remaining skoda warranty or a GTD just outside VW warranty. I have driven a 12 plate GTD and liked it alot, but a 12 plate goes for around £18K:(

Thanks for your help

The mfsw is only fitted as standard on dsgs

Washers are fitted on vrs' s with zenons, standard headlights don't have them.

VRS' s dont have sat nav as standard apart from the blackline which has the amundsen+ no voice activation as far as I' m aware.

Mine doesn't have come home lights or downlights on the mirrors

My manual is averaging circa 48mpg brim to brim if that helps-the dsg will be a few more less but will obviously depend on your typical journeys and your driving style.

Do you need a 5 door? 16k will likely get you a scirocco in warranty? The gtd seems to hold its value far too well!

Have you driven a vRS?

I went the other way, vRS to Superb and wouldn't go back to the vRS's sports suspension.

Is that because your getting old??  :moon:   haha....only kidding  :p

No your right, I am getting on a bit now at 34!

I think its more to do with my commute, rough unclassified roads that used to shake the vRS to bits and shread tyres for fun.

Then onto a smooth A road where the sports suspension has no benefit.

The Superb is still firm enough for spirited cornering but is super comfy over the increasingly common rough stuff.

Beaded seat covers on order :giggle:

Looks like I may have to get a  DSG blackline then for sat nav, and one with xenons. I do about 2500k monthly with around 2000k motorways

thanks

Need a 5 door and not keen on scirocco. A few colleagues had them and ended up with bad backs!

No I have yet to drive one, but would like something with a bit more precise handling and fun to drive

I am getting on a bit, though only in age

I recently had the same decision to make and the VRS and GTD were high on my list. I discounted the Scirocco as I think it's design is starting to date, I also looked at and discounted the 3-Series as pound-for-pound you get a lot less for your money.

It was a similar logic that led me to the VRS over the GTD - I got more for my money with the VRS.

I bought a 2011 VRS CR DSG for a touch under £12k, with 55k miles and full service history, so still under Skoda manufacturer warranty (which I intend on extending before it expires next March). It also had a few options like factory fit Xenons and the MFSW, which were a must for me. At this price range I had 3 or 4 VRS' local to me to choose from, all in a similar spec and age. The equivalent GTD would have been more expensive.

They share the same underlying platform, they both look good (IMO), they're both decent to drive (they're auto diesels, lets not forget!), so really it came down to design differences and value for money. The VRS won and I'm perfectly happy with my choice :)

(edit) Also, my driving is soon going to be 75% motorway, so the VRS seemed to suit that better. The GTD would be a sharper drive when pushed around corners, but the VRS is perfectly decent (and can be improved easily) yet seems a better cruiser.

In June when searching for a vRS TDi I looked at 5 cars.  2 had the Columbus sat-nav fitted and HID headlamps were in 2.  One was the Race Blue that I liked but the paintwork was covered with swirl marks.  I went for a black March 2012 car with DSG and rear parking sensors.  I had also considered the Golf GT TDi (140) - the GTDs were way too expensive.  Also looked at Seat Leon FR TDi (170) but was put off by the poor ride quality (even worse than the vRS) and the enormous blind spot caused by the huge A pillars.

That's a great price you got there - was that dealer or private?  I need a lower mileage vrs as my company policy for opt out vehicles is mileage less that 100k and no older than 5yrs, so anything around the 30k should last me for 3yrs, I will look for a high spec one too. Thanks

I looked at the seat too, the latest one but costs way too much, and the interior looks a bit low rent

Golf GTD is probably overall the better car and slightly better to drive, you'll however pay quite a premium for one and it'll be nothing like as commodious as a vRS hatch.

Blacklines are few and far between by the way, also seem to fetch a premium over regular vRS's due to their 2k approx additional spec over a base car. Do be aware however that they were pre-built to a determined spec so they'll have no factory extras over and above usual blackline spec but that would guarantee you black wheels, nav, DAB radio, full leather (not heated) and rear parking sensors. A neat trick with the blacklines is that the version of the Amundsen + headunit fitted to those cars has a bluetooth module that was coded out at the factory. Buy the correct mic and loom and get someone with VCDS to do the coding the car will then have full bluetooth with audio streaming too, one of the first things i did on mine.

The Blackline can't be had with xenon headlights as it wasn't possible to add factory options.

You'll be better off looking for a fully loaded non-Blackline vRS with Columbus and xenon's.

Just for info, I will be trading my vRS into my local dealer soon, its on a 12 plate, July 2012 registered, spec is TDI DSG with sunroof, black alloys, black with red stitching, parking sensors, heated seats, auto lights and wipers, sunroof and factory bluetooth, no sat nav or xenons, but its a great car, just turned 10K, its going end of February, not sure what the dealer will be asking for it, but if you were interested I can put you in touch with the dealer or something maybe.

Its a cracking car, the sat nav is easily solved with installing a Columbus (car is already coded as I put a Coilumbus in it, but thats now sold) and the xenons, it has brighter bulbs in it at the moment.

On the point about coming home lights- you get those if it has the auto lights/ wipers/ dimming mirror package.

That's too old, i need to run  it for 2-3yrs, but cannot use as company car if it's more than 5yrs old

thanks

sounds like a nice VRS!! Devon is too far for me. What are you trading in for?

I am awaiting the results of my insurance history check for the last 8yrs  as I have had a few scrapes repaired but not sure if they were insurance claims.

If my insurance proves to be too  much I may stick with a company car!

I'll look for that then

Trading for a mk3 vRS estate, couldn't resist it! :-)

Distance is no issue these days :-) delivery maybe? I can ask the dealer what they will be advertising it for if you like?

It was from an independent (non-Skoda) dealer. I was thoughtful of the mileage as I'll be doing 20-25k a year, but fortunately I don't have the same restrictions as you.

Thanks for that - what  additional spec did the blackline have?

Leather, sat nav (Amundsen), rear parking sensors and black alloys.

Thanks, am I right in thinking heated seats only available with leather?

Not sure, though my ar8e can confirm the leather seats in the blackline are not heated :giggle:
