p/s front window stuck open

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I went to put my windows up at lunch, heard a "crunch" as the window did it's 'nope, i'm opening again' routine...

Now it is stuck fully open, and try as I might, it won't close.

I have taken off the door card and motor, there is a loose cable at the back of the door (handle end) which has a lump of metal on the end, but isn't connected to anything. The inner door is riveted and haven't got as far as drilling them out yet... I will also need some sealant and new rivets before putting it back together...

I've had to blank off the window with cardboard for now, but any suggestions on how to fix? Or is it a garage jobby?

Cheers!

Window regulator pal.

Such a **** job to do, the window carrier will all need removing etc and just a ****ing pain in the arse pointless job!

Something to DIY or is it a garage job?

This happened on mine on the way to alton towers a couple of months ago. All i had in the car to bodge it was sellotape :D

Window is currently wedged up with a couple of bits of timber until I get my arse in gear and fix it

Unfortunately mine is down and the winter is not a great time for it!!! *beats head against wall*

I've changed two in the past 12 months. It's a simple job, mine was bolts not rivets. Has a sticky foam so no need to buy sealant. Once the door card was off, 3 bolts for the motor and 2 bolts to take the window off the frame (2 holes in the door panel so you can see inside to line it up) . The regulator cost about 15 off ebay and fitting it took minutes.

I also used a couple of suction cups to keep the window up while I worked on it. Sat nav/phone mount etc.

I'm not saying it's difficult, just a **** arse job to do, I had to drill mine out and use new rivets etc etc. Mine was bodge up with duck tape for about a week.

Currently in the middle of taking my driver's door apart, what a git of a job :( Also has rivets and dropped my window last night but got away with it :D

Carriers sometimes have bolts (making it a fairly straight forward job) and sometimes have rivets (which have to be drilled out, and new rivets out in, a pain in the backside)

SWMBO suffered this on her last vRS, was assured by a Skoda mechanic I knew it would be a bolt version, but hey pesto (as Peppa Pig would say), it was rivets. And I don't have a rivet gun....

You can disconnect all the wiring and remove the whole thing leaving just the cable end to open the door and prop it tight shut with a piece of wood, that'll keep the weather out while you order up the bits you need.

Bolts until late 03-mid 04 then rivets only AFAIK

My drivers side went recently. :( Pain in the arse having a window stuck open, luckily Unit 18 managed to squeeze me in! Sorted with in a hour or so.

Just in case anyone finds this thread and has the rivets, they are part number N91078801.

You'll need 10 per front door, and they are around 50p each. They are 6.4mm stainless steel rivets, so most rivet guns won't handle them. I bought a 'Lazy Tongue' riveter from screwfix that did the job nicely. Circa 40 quid, but cheaper than Garage labour.
