tdi vs tsi (again, sorry)

Featured Replies

From my past 4 fill-ups my mpg has ranged from 42 to 48. Most of my mileage comes from a 10 mile commute to work everyday with the occasional longer trip. Long motorway trips get me up to 50 mpg, at 70 to 80 mph.

So very similar to my fuel consumption in a CR150 DSG, apart from the motorway being 55+. And those figures are since October, and we all know diesels take longer to reach operating temp and are less efficient in winter. I expect to average around 52mpg after a year of mixed driving.

Sent from my phone so please excuse brevity and spelling

  • Stop perpetuating this DPF bolleaux. Has there even been a single member of these boards with a confirmed DPF (not sensor) problem on a CR engine?

  • I do 5 miles each way to work and have never once seen the DPF light, did 40k miles in my mkII vRS without trouble and my mkIII is fine too.

  • With such low mileage the petrol is a no brainer. The 1.4TSI is almost diesel-like for economey yet provides very decent performance and superb refinement. I personally would choose it over both the 1

That's interesting (anorak fully zipped up) as that was roughly what I was getting from my  heavier mkII1.4tsi 122ps (long term over 12 months was 44 for me) so I'm assuming you're probably driving yours a bit more enthusiatically than I did mine or your journey profile is stightly different as I could get 50+ on a run without too much trouble if I went into 'smooth' mode.

I'm quite happy with my vRS it's now got around 600 mile otc and it's returning about 29.5 on shortish trips, haven't had many longer ones as yet, I'm still a a happy with the car and wouldn't change it for the world.

It's the time spent crawling in queues that kills it.......and the odd burn up the dual carriageway. High mpg's are good, but it's too nice an engine not to exercise it now and again :)

I'm getting mpg's slightly lower than my Focus 2.0 tdci, and I'm quite happy with that.

I will say it again I have just changed from driving diesel cars for years to petrol - no I drive petrol / diesel because it is better.

The Skoda dealers I bought my car from is only 9 miles from where I live and it turned out that the salesman used to live near me.  I was asking about buying a diesel Octavia and explained I would be using the car mainly for short runs. He said “I got fed up having to do extra runs after work just to clear the DPF I would go petrol”. Now he is paid on commission and his cut would have been higher if I had bought a diesel.

This article looks at the effects of ash on DPFs over high mileage and the last section is an interesting read.

This article is also an interesting read and refers to the AA and Autotrader - people who know more than me.

Agreed! You're only here once, so have some fun! Even better if the wife & kids (and all their stuff) can fit in at the same time....

... and if I could afford to run an RS6, I would!

I take it your 1.4 TSI is the manual version ?

If more and more people opt for these new turbo petrol engines then hopefully the government will end the disparity on fuel duty between diesel and petrol and who knows make diesel cheaper than petrol again, like in the good old days!

More like increase the duty on petrol to offset what he's loosing through lower VED and reductions in the volumes of diesel being sold.

The relative costs reflect the fact that our refineries are not set up primarily for diesel. So we have to buy lots of it in from abroad.

Hence the raised cost.

Well that's something new ive learned today, fuel duty is the same on petrol and diesel.

In that case if people start moving away from diesel then we will have to import less more expensive diesel from abroad and the price will then hopefully move back closer to the cost of petrol.

I might be wrong but im sure way back when diesel was always cheaper, mind you my first diesel car was bought in 2011 so I'm not really in the know.

Yes, it is.

Yes, it is.

Hmmm. I'm kinda worried the VED is gonna go up dramtically on band D as they've already put a big price difference in there, which is why I'm favouring the DSG although, there is second hand 13 plate manual Elegance available for £15K & change albeit, with 13.8k on the clock..... tempting.

Too many choices right now

Residuals are dropping now for diesels . A 2008 Gti with leather will go for 10800 .. Mate who is a dealer wont touch diesels over 4 years them due to DPF

There must be someone on this forum with a 1.4 tsi manual who can give us some real world mpg figures.........where art thou.

I have been driving mine for 4000km, and getting 0.55 liters per 10km. Quite mixed between motorway and city driving.

That's approximately 5.5 litres per 100km which equals to 51.4mpg

Thats pretty much on a par with the 2.0tdi for that sort of mileage and driving conditions. Is this really the case as it takes the fuel economy factor right out the equation when deciding which to choose. Pretty much loads everything else in favour of the petrol.

Thanks Dempsek, that conversion was much appreciated.  Somehow, with my driving style, I don't anticipate getting anywhere near those kinda numbers, the poor old Mk2 didn't get an average much over 46mpg !

If I drive carefully in 80km/h in 6th gear I have been as low as 4.8 litres per 100km.

As a suggestion why don't you compare what you are getting from your current car with its official figures then transpose this difference percentage wise to the official figures for the tdi and tsi? At least that will take into considerstion your driving style and typical journeys which are probably the 2 biggest factors that determine what mpg you'll get.

Happy Christmas
