Nitrogen filled tyres - why?

Featured Replies

What's the advantage of Nitrogen filled tyres then? Seeing as air is about 80% Nitrogen anyway, whats the point?

Supposedly it doesn't leak out so your tyres stay at the correct pressures almost indefinitely.

Why not use helium and reduce unsprung weight :D

and it sounds cool.

That's from the fabia driver in me! :D

I believe it's "dry" as it doesn't contain any moisture so is less affected by changes in temperature etc. One of the other Phil's will be along shortly to explain, I'm sure ;)

AND

when you are out and about you can say 'ooops, just dropped something down here by my wheel  '

Take a crafty swallow from the tyre valve

And then stand up and have a hilarious squeeky voice and impress all around!

The mind boggles. Surely this is just a marketing tool to sell air to inflate your tyres. Or am I too cynical?

Nope...I'm on air.

I need to get to nitrogen as tyres heat up the ride changes...track days pressure rockets, even drive outs I get a change, mind you I can hardly hold my hand on my tyres at times, god knows what the pressure is when they are like that...

I've had nitrogen in my Toyos since April, and the pressure is still spot on.

So Guys, where can you fill up on some Nitrogen????

LOL! I drive past the Merityre in Andover every day and was wondering what they did in there as it's a bit out-of-town. May have to pop in there and get them to do my tyres :D

Chris

Don't think Helium is safe...........If you took off on a hump back bridge you might not come back down!!!!

There is previous discussion here.

Nitrogen is inert, aircraft tyres are inflated with it 100% for safety reasons. Not sure I'd pay for it for a car though.
