Rain sensitive wipers

Featured Replies

I find that it can be encouraged into action by nudging the sensitivity up one and then back down again. :)

Doesn't that defeat the object of them? If you have to adjust the sensitivity then its exactly the same as adjusting the speed on the non rain-sensitive type.

I think the rain-sensitive ones are a solution to a problem that didn't exist. If they worked reliably then fine but they don't. At the moment mine are working reasonably well but I've also had long spells where they've been a real nuisance.

They should be dropped from standard equipment and made an option. That way those who want them can have them without it being forced on the rest of us.

Mine's 05 and it is okay most of the time.

But the best control I ever came across was on a US rental car where the intermittant wiper speed was set with a rotating control on the end of the stalk. It was just like a transistorised throttle used to control a motor speed (any model railroaders out there!!??)

There didn't seem to be individual settings - you just turned it up to what worked well for any particular conditions. At the top end of the scale it was just normal speed wipers, and a click further for high speed. Simple and efficient.

Going one way (can't remember which now!), each click of the switch will give the wipers one sweep which I presume is to wipe the screen and start the metering process from fresh.

Yep, one of them.

I still think the Nissan system is the best i've come across, there was a 7 position rotary kn0b on the end of the wiper stalk to tweak the sensitivity, they worked perfectly every time even when the wiper blades were shot (can't say the same for the rest of the car!). The auto wipers on the K12 Micra were spot on too.

If Nissan can do it surely VAG can!!

Ahem!

Turn your resolution down a bit and you'll see it's in fact an Avro Vulcan, one of the best examples of British engineering along with the English Electric Lightning and the ill fated TSR-2 :squint:

I have 1 2010 Skoda Octavia Scout 1.8 TSI.

How can I turn the automatic rain sensors on and off?

Please help, I live in Greece and at junctions there are always people trying to clean the windscreens of cars. Every time I'm at a junction someone gets a wet window scraper and starts cleaning my windscreen which always sets off the wipers. These people don't take no for an answer and I've almost broken the wipers on a few occasions.

Please tell me I can turn them off.

Leave then in the 'OFF' position until it starts to rain.

Where is the OFF position? That's my point.

Nothing says "no thanks" like a .44 magnum

Haha.

I may try that.

The first position of the stalk is off. Press down flick wipe. Off. Rain sensing. Slow then fast in that order as you move the stalk.

As above. But I'd just spray them with washer fluid if they came anywhere near my windscreen.

I'll try it out when I get the chance.

They are usually there before you even realise. They start on the back window too sometimes.

Not an Octavia stalk but the positions are the same....

Thanks a lot. That really helped me out.
