retrofit instrument cluster

Featured Replies

i know people have asked if you can retrofit the maxidot cluster into their cars but my question is:

can you fit other VAG vehicle instrument clusters providing its from the right engine type i.e. tdi?

ive been looking at these:

besides that, id like a change in colour and the lit needles :')

See dark_hero about a change of colour ;).. hes done a few on here + he can get rid of all the horrible green LEDs in the rest of the interior to match.. elec windows/ heater controls/ rear heated screen button etc etc..

i'll drop him a message, cheers dude :)

but can anyone answer my question lol

Link doesn't work, but assuming that's a Golf/Bora like the URL suggests, aren't they a different shape anyway?

No idea on the IMMO side of things etc. though.

You can change the cluster from other cars, but they will need recoding.

Another option is to change the plastic sheet with the printed speedo information

So long as the revs and speed is the same as your existing one it could be a straight swap :)

We may have to give it a look into :)

How much messing about is coding in?

I too want this done. Is anyone on here capable of doing it??

I'm a bit out of the way for most people on here but I can code clocks. It's not that difficult. Just getting the skc is the main bit. Adapting new clocks to the ecu should be straightforward too.

but can you fit ones from different cars?

Sounds like a ball ache I'd only go anywhere near trying to change the dash if it was actually broken

but can you fit ones from different cars?

The octavia has different connectors on the back to the Fabia, so I'm guessing the golf/ bora would be the same :(

I'd assume a polo/ Ibiza one may work though

awwwww :(

So if i can find a maxidot cluster could you code that in?

I'd be impressed if anyone could code a maxidot dash easily.

From other cars.... depends on the hardware.  The biggest issue is always the ccm and abs controller compatibility.  Speedos, fuel guages etc can always be fixed to work, immobilisers are easily dealt with too.

Can someone confirm for me, the maxidot needs extra wiring or has some issue with a normal car which wasn't fitted from factory.  As far as I'm aware making the clocks actually match the ecu and sorting the keys should be easy but isn't there an issue with the speedo or something?

I've never really looked into it, but like anything else, with a bit of effort there's no reason it can't be made to work.  If i get some time I'll have a look at the elsawin diagrams and try to figure out what the problem might be.

See, thats what i like to hear aha

Id be very interested to know. The speedos in the picture that i was looking at can be had relatively cheap imo. And id like that fresh interior look.

Someone has done one, I think it was shark for someone on here. It took a fair while though from what I can remember. It does look good though.

Several were bought as part of a group buy that may or may not have been a bit dodgy. None of the clusters supplied worked properly. You need to match the cluster with the CAN Bus controller. Ben at Shark has my old one if anyone wants to spend money trying it out.

I'd be happy to try a few things to see if I can get it going.  But i don't expect someone to lend me a maxidot cluster to do that so i'm a bit stuck there.

As far as the can bus goes.  What exactly is the issue with it?  I assume it's not as simple as a can bus reset and recalibration?

I find it mindblowing that this retrofit has never been done and documented for other people to do.  I know a man that should be able to help if it stumps me too.

Anyone know the part no for a maxidot display?

Apparently it's this:

6Y0 920 940 S KDO

The cost of parts and amount of time/effort/knowledge it takes means most people don't bother once its looked into. If anyone can get one working and a supply of parts I'd love mine doing. Unless you can do it yourself though I suspect it'd cost as much as the car!

It's like any other mod though.  If one person know's how to do it and doesn't share the information then the price goes sky high.  Alternatively if anyone can do it with the correct knowledge then it becomes easier and cheaper.  I know the clusters aren't very common but i would have expected someone to share the information by now about how it's done.  Or at least if they didn't know they could share the stuff they've tried.

I know of users on the mk5 golf forum that are able to recode highline clocks into lowline vesrions using the sku code, my brother had it done by a lad down south.

Coding the actual cluster itself isn't a problem. The problem is that the car with a maxidot has additional options that are controllable through the maxidot - door locking when you press the key fob etc. and they require the right CANBus module. You also need the controller for the MFD1 as that has to be present to give some readings to the maxi dot. You don't need to have the MFD1 installed, but you do need the controller.

There were LOTS of weird issues with the maxidots. In my case, the speedometer over-read a bit. Some people had issues with the fuel readings not being right.

As far as I'm aware no-one ever managed to make one work properly. Both Ross Clarke (Tech1e) and Ben Wardle (Shark90) had a go at coding my car, as did Skoda in Norwich. In the end, Skoda in Milton Keynes made it work in exchange for me sharing the source of the maxidot cluster as they were VERY interested in where they had come from (a skip at the Siemens Factory was one suggestion). I sold that complete install to another member on here who couldn't make it work subsequently in their car, so there is some voodoo involved somewhere.

Anyway -Bazmcc, if you're serious about giving it a go, I'm sure I can get the car over to NI (I have a place near Banbridge) sometime soon, but I wouldn't want to spend a lot more money on it as it's already cost a small fortune.
