Trying a FIS link box to install premium bluetooth in preFL Octy with maxidot

Featured Replies

Following a bit of luck with a couple of small wagers this weekend, I have decided to experiment and try this alongside a premium bluetooth module in my pre FL Octavia: http://www.carsystems.pl/fis-link-can-box-converter-for-red-dot-matrix-fis-and-new-bt-modules,id687.html.

This box apparently converts the older pre FL DDP canbus signal to BAP, which is used to communicate with the bluetooth setup. Essentially it then (hopefully) means that the newer premium bluetooth modules will appear in the pre FL maxidot and be fully functional. (Without this box, the phone menu wouldn't appear in the maxidot, and so there would be no way to pair the premium modules.)

I have also picked up a premium 3c8 bluetooth module quite cheaply and plan to recoup a portion of my outlay selling my existing 5k0 module if this works. But even if it doesn't, it's the bookies cash and looking at prices on eBay, I can probably sell the premium module for as much as I paid for it, so fingers crossed and I will report back when the items arrive...

Well to report back on this, I fitted the FIS link box today and it worked giving me telephone in my maxidot.  I went from the outside to the gateway (behind the wiper mechanism) and fitted the box alongside the gateway using cable ties and it fits into the space available pretty much perfectly.  I was also able to fit the update cable permanently with tape and drop the usb end of the lead under the dash and into the cubby pocket for easy future updating.

I coded my new 3c8 module and although I am still working through all the options in the maxidot, it mostly seems fine.  In rSap premium mode, I get text readout on the maxidot and can even write texts on the Columbus (not that I would!).  The one issue I have at the moment is reading texts on the maxidot which doesn't work, and so I am going to look into this as I like everything to work even if I wouldn't use the option!

But a pretty good result I'd say.  The FIS link box cost me 100 quid plus postage from carsystems.pl, which is a bit pricey, but I am happy that I now have full maxidot integration and the ability to use a premium BT module in a pre FL Octavia.

Sorry to bump an old thread. Bus is the GSM aerial pre installed as part of the sat nav aerial?

I'm looking to install for a scirocco with an RNS510 and red MFD and by the sounds of it you're running the skoda alternatives.

Basically this BT module and options (displaying incoming texts either on the columbus screen or the dashboard screen. One worry I have reading some reviews is with the premium module due to the car "highjacking" the sim any texts are then stored on the car instead of the phone?

Hi

On mine there was a GSM aerial prep pre-installed but that was for an older phone kit and of no use. Initially I used a simple stick on windscreen one which plugs into the module (cost a tenner) but then when I upgraded to a DAB Columbus, I upgraded the aerial to include a newer GSM connector and now use that. But the stick on is still there and worked absolutely flawlessly.

Don't worry about texts. They don't get stored in the car they get stored on the SIM. It's just the car takes over the SIM in premium mode so it appears like that. You can always move them from the SIM to the phone when the bluetooth is disconnected.

Hope that helps

Oh and one issue is that the texts arent able to display on the older display due to limitations with the red dot display. But it tells you have one and it can be readout if you have a RNS510 with voice control set up (or viewed on the hu).

My GPS shark fin had an unused connector for GSM. Just needed to add an appropriate wire down to the BT module when I installed it.

If you do you premium BT then add mentioned the sim card of effectively removed from the phone and any texts received will be stored on the sim card.

However, where as older phones used the sim as storage for texts, most modern ones don't so they may not appear on the phone.

At least one extension for the rSAP app tries to correct this on android phones. I found it quite hit and miss too be honest...

My Samsung phone connects natively and there is an option to simply copy from SIM to phone. In my case, the SIM does store the texts on it.

Like Langers2k, I also had to add the line from the new aerial to the module through the headlining.

Still working well Adam?
This is my next mod, so I can install and 7p6 module and stream audio from my phone.

I had a Polar FIS+ which was supposed to do the same job (I never tested it with a phone kit), but it still wouldn't allow me to switch between Maxidot screens with the stalk until I put some kind of update on to my Columbus.

Yes no issues John. Just to be clear you are better with a 3C8 a to e module as it also allows premium connection (although you may need the rSap app if you haven't got a Samsung). It will still work in the basic hfp mode with an iPhone.

It also allows separate connection to a media player and (different) phone.

Cheers, and thanks to the other guy responding about the rsap app that will do an auto transfer, I was reading up about it it today.

I keep changing mind what I want to install. From the latest 7p6 version, latest premium or the fiscon and they all have their flaws or positives to me. One thing I am unsure about as my car is RNS510 native then I may have the GSM aerial and connection in place, so won't know till I find out if I need the dedicated aerial. It's a bit of a shame that the red MFD won't display texts with this which then puts me back to the fiscon idea- although I hate that they force FISCON MOBILE onto the display all the time,.....gah! Decisions!

Going back to the 3c8 idea I'm not sure if my MFS has the voice control button and a quick read up of having to possibly rewire things or buy yet an other cable is all rather daunting...

Maybe I should just keep it all simple have the standard BT, really just want to txt display so I know if I need to phone someone back instantly...for that 1% of the time! :P
