Sudden Tyre Deflation

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is the correct part of the forum to ask this question, Mods feel free to move it.

Just wondering if my problem has been experienced by anyone else. Just driving along at maybe 40mph and the rear nearside tyre suddenly deflates, luckily I specced my 2014 140BHP dpf 4x4 with the optional spare wheel. Unluckily however it was pouring with rain LOL; and I did not spec the tyre pressure monitors. Incidently the car has only covered 300miles from new having picked it up a fortnight ago.

Anyway I changed the wheel and carried on my journey, thinking I will pop into a tyre place tomorrow when they reopen after the Bank Holiday.

When I got home I got the damaged wheel into my garage and I can find no visible evidence of a puncture. it simply looks like the tyre has suddenly deflated. Anyone had a similar problem?  or can suggest a solution?

Sorry to start my forum adventure with a problem. but had I not had the problem I would not have found the forum, Every cloud has a silver lining eh! LOL

Even if you did have TPMS it wouldn't have picked up a sudden deflation like that.

What happens if you try and reinflate the tyre?

It is recommended that brakes need to be 'run in' to ensure they 'seat' correctly wih no fast bend taking with a full load etc. during the first few hundred miles or so.

Wih no apparent damage to the tyre could it be that it didn't seal correctly to the rim?

Pleased to hear no one was hurt or damaged caused by this incident.

You haven't checked your pressures and put cheap air into the tyres. There was a thread recently about using sub standard air.

here you go, read this

LOL no substandard air used AG. It was genuine Skoda Air so should be OK

Shanco No fast bends in fact I really do drive too slowly if the truth be known.

Trundlenut I have not tried re inflation as I do not have a compressor or foot pump, but I will try to re inflate it in the morning before going to my local dealer.

Thanks for the swift reply's

I had this when a wheel I had fitted with a tyre hadn't sealed around the bead enough, so it basically leaked really fast suddenly, about 48 hours later.  It was removed & refitted again using lots of bead sealer, and all was well.

I was worried as thought I had killed a brand new tyre.....

Just a quick update, located my mini compressor tried to pump up the trye to be met by a hissing sound, further investigations and I find a rip in the shoulder / side wall of the tyre which in its deflated state was not visible. God only knows how this happened as I cannot remember hitting any potholes etc. Anyway the upshot is its an expensive trip to the tyre shop for a new Dunlop SP Sport 01 Tyre.

Thanks all for the input.

Extremely bad luck :S .  Debris on the road, perhaps?

I ran over a piece of metal which cut the tyre between the tread blocks which left a 2" long but very thin cut which was hard to spot. I only know what caused it because the piece of metal embedded itself in the mudflap.

Thanks lads

Booked into Asda tyres on Tuesday Morning for a Dunlop Sport 01 225 X 50 X 17 for just under £140 which I thought was fairly reasonable.

Just glad I ordered a spare wheel, there is no way a can of spray foam would have fixed this cut.

Had a similar experience with my Yeti late last year..

Well not quite the same as my tyre literally exploded, leaving a large hole in the outer sidewall, whilst it was parked in my driveway
The car had not been driven since the previous day , approx 20 hours..

Only then realised that the Yeti Greenline Elegance does not come with spare tyre, just the repair kit, which of course wasnt much help.

Fortunately still covered by breakdown scheme who towed car to tyre supplier as Skoda agents who I bought it off were not interested.

Mechanic said he had never seen anything like it and that in his opinion it was a defective tyre.

Tried Skoda who said it wasnt their problem and that I should try tyre manufacturer, who in turn after a few months said that the tyre must have been curbed at some time.

Your experience pretty much sums up the thoughts that went through my mind following my incident. I simply concluded it was best to get my hand in my pocket and shell out for a new tyre rather than enter into dialogue about the whys and wherefores of my driving style ......... just put it down to bad luck.
