HEADLIGHTS FOR VRS

Featured Replies

Headlights are not the brightest on my 58 plate octavia vrs.My wife drives it 99% of the time & is complaining to me about it.We had xenons on our last car which was an audi. Can i get xenons for my vrs & if so can you recommend anywhere to buy them from & how much are they likely to cost me,Many thanks,Mark

have you tried having the lights lined up? People commonly thing their lights need replacing etc when they are just not well alligned. Saying that, HID's are one of those things, once you've had them you'll never go back

A compromise would be to fit different headlight bulbs. Nighbreaker unlimited or something similar that gives a whiter light than the standard bulbs won't cost much and are easy to fit. I have Halfords extremes in mine as they were BOGOF when I was looking for an upgrade.

Here's the link for the osrams

I have no idea why people constantly moan about their lights , the standard ones are absolutely fine.

He's come from xenon's, even the best halogen lights are out performed by OEM xenon's.

Nothing better than xenon lights. I had them in my cooper s and since moving to the octavia I have never been happy with the light output but the problem with canbus or non canbus units for the octavia I have decided to stick with halogen and gone for Phillips xtreme vision which are a pretty bright white light.

As "Silver" says best bet is upgrade to hid for best result. London colour do an hid kit and it is cheap.

I opted for Osrams as the simplest upgrade from standard as do not know anyone with vcds to code the car for hid.

The osrams are an improvement and managed to get a genuine set of night breaker gold for around £16.00 delivered from Amazon a few months back.

 I have done this

In total you will need between 800 and 900 euros.

I simply fitted HIDs to my std projector housings. Totally illegal down here without automatic levelling & washers but it does the job without dazzling oncoming drivers (have had them for 50,000km & pass 6 HWP cars every day on my commute). I do have really hard springs (I have Eibach diesel vRS wagon springs in a 1.8tsi sedan) in the back of my car though, so when I fill with fuel it only drops 10mm for 50L. I think the HIDs cost me about AUD120 (GBP80?).

The kick-up on the LHS is very severe with the HIDs & has been annoying me for 2 years so today I flattened the beam using the EU conversion tab inside the headlight.

How do you know it doesn't dazzle other drivers?  Perhaps they are just so used to the plethora of people driving around with these daft lights they don't bother to flash you any more. its usually corsa's round our way with dodgy xenons and i can say that the majority of them cause me dazzle.

Most of the cars that dazzle me with retro fit hid's and some are unbeleivably bad, on checking them out it tends to be the old reflector type headlamps.

Not really noticed too much dazzle from the retro fitted projector lamp types or no more than catching a brand new top of the range modern car as it comes over the brow of a hill.

The only reason a HID kit was recommended to the OP was because his car has projector headlights.

Let's drop the 'legal debate', it has been done to death many, many times.

Totally agree with your comments, my contribution was purely aimed at providing a possible upgrade from the standard bulbs if the OP didn't want to go as far as a HID upgrade.

My comment was aimed more towards ed209, uprated bulbs are definitely a good way to improve light output if you didn't want to head down the HID route.

Who mentioned any legal debate? i mentioned a lot of after market xenons dazzle me which is a fact, legal or not.

Round here, most dazzle comes from big 4x4's and tranny type vans.

To answer the OP's question, LondonColour via ebay, about £25ish.

Uprated bulbs come a rather poor second and not much cheaper, and much shorter lived.

Would have thought there would be someone near you to do any coding required.

LED "bulbs" are starting to hit the aftermarket, but are so far quite expensive at around £50 per unit for anH4 for my bike.

ADV inmates are pretty enthusiastic as to their use in auxilary lamps.

Does anyone know if the same hysteria is attached to their use as HID's?

I think you have your wires crossed.

The legality of HID's was mentioned in #10 but the post by me which you have quoted was not directed at you. It was in response to littleade's comment at #14 which in turn was derived from your post #5.

Anyone used these? I would be interested in putting one in my bike as it takes H4.

ECP has a 51% off sale on Osram bulbs right now. No idea if Octy bulbs are in there or not.

[Clickity click] Yes they are.

It's a fair question.

They are projector headlight housings (which shouldn't have halogens in them IMO but that's another subject).  There's a definate horizontal cut-off line & no upward light spill.  Plus the vehicle has been lowered on Eibachs designed for a wagon, so the front dropped a lot more than the rear, therefore the lights are a bit low now anyway.

I'm in Sydney, Australia.  I have driven a fair few km around the Southern part of Britain (thanks for a great holiday!) & also germany, Austria & Czech Republic.  Our HWP in NSW are absolute ******s & the government is a bit of a nanny state, so you are very likely to be pulled over if you have high pointing lights or your fogs on in good weather etc.  As I said, I pass 6 HWP cars a day that simply sit with the registration camera going & they are looking for suspect looking vehicles.  They rarely do speed duties because of the number of speed cameras we have - puppies die if you exceed the speed limit by more than 10% here.

2200lm.........not sure thats bright enough is it? Anyone know the exact figures for hid and halogen lights?

I have a single cree led in each reversing lamp and there is no way 4 of those will out perform my oem hid's. Infact I think they'd struggle to outperform oem halogens as cree's in car headlights dont seem to have the reach that they do in things like torches
