140 bhp! Don't think so

Featured Replies

I'm just not getting enough response to my comments in the following thread in which I suggest the actual bhp of the 1.9 PD Tdi and 2.0 PD Tdi is 11% and 12% higher than on paper.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?p=394361#post394361

So i'm being really cheeky, probably breaking the rules and starting this new thread to provoke a response.

I want feedback guys (& girls obviously)

:revs:

Well, if its any help, my old PD100 was putting out 109bhp on jabba's rollers a while back, and Dad's 140hp TDI golf V drives like a 150bhp car. :o Not sure that helps though.

At least its a good 10% not a negative one. :D

Well, I'm a firm believer in how the car drives & how it delivers it's power. TBH, I'm not that interested in peak power figures, but I do like to know what difference a remap/chip/tuning box can make.

Calibration of a rolling road is an important factor along with ambient temperature, inlet temperature, tyre pressures, etc. I'm not saying that each rolling road is incorrect but there are a wide range factors that would influence results.

As mentioned in the previous thread, VAG TDI's have always produced more than quoted figures.

Just a note on overboost. Ford seem to have latched on to the "transient overboost" thing. Most TDI's have overboost - it's where the turbo delivers more boost than the ECU requested (boost spike). As long as the boost spike is within the safe working limit of the turbo, it's not a problem. The only way to stop it happenng is to have a bleed valve in pipework (sometimes known as a dawes device).

Thanks for that info Jon TDI. My knowledge is pretty good on Petrol engines but i'm still learning on the Diesel front. The modern diesel seems to be a much more complicated beast that modern Petrols. A bit of a black art really.

At least i've got confirmation on PD engines often having more actual power than on paper.

Interesting comments about the rolling road tests although i'm sure a company like Superchips would take all of the influences into account as far as is practicable in their tests.

I'm still looking forward to getting my 2.0 PD TDi 155 Bhp Octy II Elegance in October.

I'm just not getting enough response to my comments in the following thread

What d'ya want, a feckin medal?

It's would seem that the VAG PD engines give consistently more power than the quoted figures, which is good I guess.

Having just looked at the power and torque curve for the 120d however, bmw have moved one step ahead of the competition. What a stonking engine on paper!

If you think the 130d is good, take a look at the 535d.

I was comparing like for like, but yes that is awesome long with the Touareg V10 TDI

I don't think the VAG engines do give out much more power than quoted.

I've seen a couple of printouts where a 130 is 130 or 131 ish.

I had a conversation with a guy who at least seemed to know what he was talking about. He explained about atmospheric compensation, the MAF is used to measure air volume entering combustion and the ECU will compensate accordingly to maintain the desired output and load.

Are there medals available? Do they have a Briskoda logo on them? If so i'd rather have mine in a silver and not too big as it might look a tad pretentious against my new shell suit.

All right i'll shut up now agent006. You've made your point.

ps Didn't you coordinate a plot to hijack the GoldenEye satellite to rob the bank of England a few years back?

Johnnyc your last post in the other thread is good, and believe me I'm happy that my 2.0 tdi (that will come next week :P ) is 155 HP and not 140...

Is just a shame that VW is not branding this engine at least 150 HP...this way, it would compete much better with the tdci mondeo 155 hp . My guess is that VW is not doing so with the 2.0 because they have 2 reasons:

1) they already had a 1.9tdi 150 hp model and they don't want the customers to be confused

2) they will release soon the new 175(?) hp engine...and 150 vs 175 isn't so big difference than 140 vs 175...and they need more clients for this new engine, right ?

anyway I'm intersted in the 0-100km/h tests with the 2.0..maybe someone did this and can post their numbers ?

im guessing it would depend one which rollers the car has been on. some can read more and i guess some can read less.

easier just to accept the car has its stated figure of 140bhp and anymore is an unknown bonus

I know what you mean Jas, my standard Octy vRS seems a lot quicker than the stated 180bhp for some reason.

My PD100 put out 116bhp and current furby 150bhp (exhaust though) in standard form on Jabbas rollers..

Seems a touch optimistic tbh..

There are other RRs that seem to give figures that are more or less spot on with manufacturers claims... maybe they are too pessimistic who knows..lol.

Also it keeps insurance groupings down and in some tax classes in europe (iirc) and configured on engine output. So under quoting it gets around this.

0-60mph octy 2 litre tdi 140

made a bit of a hash of it but it gives you an idea.

Chris G. Interesting videoclip. If accurate it would indicate 0-60 just under 10secs as per the manufactuer's data. Where was the camera? Was someone else holding it and contributing weight to the car? If you were holding the camera yourself how do you change gear or do you have a DSG box? More importantly if a manual box, what rpm did you change gear at?

Johnny do you not think you are getting a little bit obsessed with numbers!! You've not even got the car yet, if it's not going to live up to your expectations in terms of power then why buy it??

Prob not that accurate, just gives us a rough guide.

Manual box, me holding camara, 1 passenger in the car, gear change at around 4000 rpm.

Its wasnt a very good run, im sure you could knock another second from that time after a little practice

Hopfully i will be getting a tuning box or remap in the near future, be intresting to see the difference in the times.

Your'e right i'm obsessed. I've got frig all else to do until Oct 28th when I get my car. I'm stuck fruiting around in a 1.5dci Megane until then while my boss flashes the keys of his overpriced underspeced Audi 2.7 A6 TDi S-Line and the smug plonker next to me keeps going on about his new overpriced underspeced 1.9 TDi Golf Sport.

I'll show them all, just watch me. They may laugh at the badge and present me with a taxi sign when I get my lovely new Octy II 2.0 Tdi Elegance (manual) but i'll have the last laugh.

Obviously thats subject to being off the medication by then and the doctor deeming it ok for the authorities to lift the driving ban.

My phychiatrist is also concerned about a recent problem i've had with the letters DSG when I hear them spoken together. I keep hunching down, covering my ears and saying 'say it aint so, say it aint so'. Interestingly the problem only seems to have developed since I started brosing the Briskoda forum.

I meant Browsing. It's not a doctor's term.

I'm pleased with my purchase and not normally obsessed so much with my car only i've such a long wait and wan't to know as much about the car as possible. Short of getting a photocopy or pdf of the user manual, i'll still not be satified until I get the car.

A couple of other interesting items. The bosses wife is a real power freak. She blew up her M3 a couple of years back and no car has satisfied her since. Believe it or not she's been bitten by the diesel bug. She drove an 2.0 TDi A3 6 Sp Manual and a BMW 120d (the 160 odd bhp one) last week and was dissapointed in the BM.Said it wasn't a patch on the Audi for overtaking. Both cars had about 2k on them.

That smug git next to me got a low oil level warning on Friday on his golf. He had it a few days before and put about 3/4 of the 1 litre container he got with the car in. When the warning came up this time we pulled over and added the remaining 250ml or so but i also noticed an oil leak. The low oil level light went out anyway and we got it to the dealer who took the car in. He said you should add the whole litre when the light comes on. Less than a litre will not extinguish the light but simply opening and closing the bonnet will reset the light for 100 miles. I pointed out that if the oil level has fallen by 1 litre by the time the light has come on and the engine only holds just over 4 litres, then you've already been doing damage. He agreed and pointed out that the 1.9 will use up to about 1.25 litres in the 1st 5000 miles. The 2.0 will use about a litre too.

'How often should you check the oil level after the 1st 5000 miles then ?' I asked the service guy. 'Everytime you refuel' he exclaimed. 'It's not a friggin' RX8' I retorted. 'That's our advice' he said.

The Golf was in for 4 days. The oil filter housing seal had failed.

Blimey, you have got it bad!

My standard Furby vRS got 129.7 from the JBS rollers in April. I think I might write to Skoda asking for some compensation for the lost 0.3bhp ;)

When it comes, get out there, enjoy it and forget about the numbers...

Hi all

Our rolling road is said to be the most accurate out there.

We have not seen a PD engine have loads more bhp than it should have.

As have been said on many occasions alsot can be taken in to account when a car goes on to the rolling road.

But I am sorry in our dealings with this matter standard cars =standard bhp.
