Crew cabin protection

Featured Replies

Remember that these will only deploy in a severe impact.

Having attended many car accidents, I would take my chances with an airbag over metal hitting my kids, but each to his own.

This video shows what happens on the Octavia III in testing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uayRqZIJyOs

So what your proposing is anyone with crew protection fitted to their octavia 3 and carries young children around are potentially putting their childs lives in greater danger?

Maybe but thats just my view. Car airbags are not really designed specifically with child/infant protection in mind are they and (it is just my opinion, im not suggesting im necessarily correct as im no automotive engineer) the pack is probably designed to provide greater protection for adult occupants from a rear 3/4 impact should one ever occur, not necessarily insulate a child in their child seat from the impact.

The car already has side airbags, and they are not there just to protect front occupants they are mounted in the front seats usually as they are within the appropriate vicinity of the b pillar. Im sure side airbags fire to try to limit deformation of the side of the car into the cockpit which would provide some protection from side impact for rear passengers anyway. The curtain airbags would cover the rear window area which would at least prevent glass being thrown into the car at high velocity which would be of benefit to a child naturally providing some head protection for adults too. In my mind (given that 7 airbags is quite a compliment anyway and the car is as standard 5 star NCAP compliant) it has enough airbags.

Wasnt looking for defensive comebacks from people who have ordered the package on their car, we all justify things differently and its not something to argue about, just my view is that airbags and small children do not mix very well and its not like such a comment is completely unfounded.

Car accidents and humans don't mix. It's all about finding ways to dissipate and minimise energy transfer between vehicles and humans, this is all that the many safety devices in cars are designed to do. Too much energy or too quickly transferred = damaged person.

side impact is probably the most dangerous especially when hitting a fixed object (tree or lamp post)

I don't think the side airbag will help a great deal if the crash is at a higher speed

In the video above the last crash into a fixed pole was at only 19mph

And the impact looks severe, so a higher speed would certainly result in a more severe injury or death

Not a chance. Airbags are there to slow down/cushion/prevent the impact of the human into the relevant part of the car. They will not stop any deformation of the car (normally made of metal). An airbag is exactly that...a bag with air in it.

There is an added benefit of the window airbags which will prevent shattered glass hitting the passenger.

It really is a no brainer option.

Actually in Romania, you can get them separately. I added only back seats airbags. Though, it will be nice now if it can be activated from VCDS ( the crew protection ).
