Crew cabin protection

Featured Replies

Has anyone got the crew cabin protection option. This is the option that closes the windows and pretentious the seats belts if the car looses control.

I'm after a vcds scan so I can compare as I believe this is just a software option.

I've found an option that is called precrash which I believe is related to it.

I thought pretentious seat belts are only fitted on BMWs?  :giggle:

I thought the option added extra air bags too?  mind you, I wasn't interested in it so did ask the dealer ..so could be quite wrong

This is one VCDS hack that I wouldn't feel comfortable going near.

Hi yes I have crew protection on mine. I bought it instead of columbus upgrade as I felt my kids safety was more of a priority in an accident than a better entertainment/sat nav system!

So, it includes the seat belts that tighten to hold a person in the seat if the car thinks your going to crash, also shuts the windows (if they are open) and passenger rear side airbags.

I hope I never use any of it! Now there is a revelation! An option that I bought and hope I never use!!!!!!!

Hmm, in Romania the crew protect assistant and the rear side airbags are two different options. Do they come bundled together in the UK?

The crew protect assistant is so cheap, that it's a no brainer to get it. Same as with the footwell lights.

Yep in the uk rear airbags and crew protection are listed seperately but have to be taken together. Just like the winter pack nonsense!

I'm with you Pumatron, execpt I dropped the Met. paint in place of this and a bootnet, now everything in the back will be safe Kids, picnic and golf clubs Ok, Ok maybe not in that order.  I kinda figured I could polish the paintwork to make it look good for the 20 days of sunshine we get per year.

It seems I was wrong, it's the same for us. They are listed separately, but have to be taken as a whole...

Im sure its safe but I still dont much like the idea of an airbag firing so close to where a child seat would be fitted. Could cause more harm than good. Is one reason Im not mad keen on fitting a child seat in the front of the car as although the passenger airbag can be turned off not sure it disables the side bag.

I do however like the rear seatbelt indicators that are standard fit, I am sure one day my kids will start mucking with their belts.

Just my humble opinion and not suggesting im correct.

Ditto I spec'd it thinking my daughter sits in the back how could I ever forgive myself if we crashed and didn't have it!!!

Seems strange how a family car could have them on the front but, not on the rear.

@pipyp, I guess I'm correct in assuming that you have your kids safely in their children seats. Then the side airbags comes between the impact and the child seat. It should never even come close to the child in it.

I got crew protection and rapidly closing rear windows in the event of collision. The salesman I picked it up from in Leeds told me that he had seen this option in action under test conditions at a factory. Apparently the windows shoot up v. quick and then drop a few centimetres to allow air in, just in case. In addition the seat belt's tighten and hug the passenger into the seats.

That sounds like a lethal option for those dog owners who allow their dogs to put their heads out of back windows. :(

Yeah of course and it all makes sense.

Just airbags as you well know use powerful pyrotechnics to deploy and deploy with extraordinary force. They can and have been known to kill small children on the odd occasion. Kill the odd adult here and there too.

I appreciate the benefits of airbags and they save way more lifes than they take but then small children wont ever be able to deal with the forces these things dish out compared to an adult and im still not entirely comfortable with having them directly next to my childs body (even with the seat in between) or facing them.

An interesting scenario.....a rear airbag going off with a rear facing child seat installed.....of course it should be Ok but what if youve installed the seat slightly within the firing line of the bag??.....just a what if but food for thought.

Dont want to start an anti airbag debate as I wouldnt buy a car without them for my own protection, i just personally question whether they serve children as well as they do adults. Just my view.

Parenthood comes with responsibilities but, without a manual hence, every parents view is important to themselves and their children ONLY therefore, I won't make any further comment on this matter.

I have NO regrets in ordering extra airbags for protection of the occupants in my octavia.

I'd rather give a rear passenger be it a child or adult a chance of survival against an air bag firing than for example the front of an articulated truck in a side impact.

I don't think the side airbags (front or rear) are that big so wouldn't be as dangerous as the front passenger airbag in the dash. I think most cases of serious injuries due to airbags has been when passengers or drivers sit too close to the airbag.

Will pre-tensioning seat belts not remove this issue ?

If you sit in the front and close to the airbag

The seat belt pre-tensioner will tighten and hold you in the seat

The airbag deploys and you will be squashed in the seat if there is not enough room

Really ? Why TF have these systems been developed if they're that dangerous or is it, just misuse of those whom like to drive scrunched up.

Its not to knock crew protection but i personally still wouldnt be comfortable having a device containing explosive charges, compressed air and capable of deploying at over 200mph within inches of my child.

There have been cases where side airbags have killed young/infant children in low speed impacts where it was determined in the investigation they'd have likely survived with minor injuries otherwise, particularly if rear facing which is the recommendation up to a certain age/weight.

I'll take my chances with the drivers, side and curtain bags pounding the crap out of me if I have an accident and would hope they'd do their bit to save me but I still feel (and its my view only) its a potential risk to subject really young children to the same.

It's just idiots who don't read the manual sit to close to the steering wheel. Also know and 'natural selection'.

So what your proposing is anyone with crew protection fitted to their octavia 3 and carries young children around are potentially putting their childs lives in greater danger?
