Is new vrs twincharged?

Featured Replies

No, it has a single turbo. Think its still a KO3 or KO3S variant as VAG have been using for years on their smaller turbo engines.

Would explain why a tuned 220ps TSi will only make approx 40-50 more HP, likely limitation being the turbine.

Yes it's correct. All the recent VAG turbos use twinchargers.

pipsys, twincharger is a single turbo. Twincharging and twin-turbo are different things.

No it's not, it's incorrect. "our Octavia vRS set a land speed record in the G-PS Category at Bonneville Salt Flats – reaching a speed of 227.080MPH. We can now claim the world’s fastest 2.0 litre supercharged production car… NEEEEEAAAAAOOOOOWWWWWW! The vRS that you can buy has a TSI engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged"

WRONG. :(

What is wrong? You just pasted a passage with no comment.

no, I didn't, I stated its wrong clearly at the beginning. It obviously just has a turbo. :)

A twincharger is indeed "just a turbo".

The Skoda ad states, "The vRS that you can buy has a TSI engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged".

I pointed this out in another post back in November.  There is NO supercharger on a VRS engine.

A twincharger is indeed "just a turbo".

Not my Twincharger ;)

Even the Mk2 Octavia small petrols used twinchargers. Why wouldn't the new VRS? I haven't seen any recent VAG turbo without a twincharging system.

Bear in mind, this just means the turbo system utilizes two different power sources, it's not "two turbos" as some people seem to think. It is still just a turbo.

"Twincharger refers to a compound forced induction system used on some piston-type internal combustion engines. It is a combination of an exhaust-driven turbocharger and an engine-driven supercharger, each mitigating the weaknesses of the other"

From the bible of internet information - Wikipedia

The problem i think some are pointing out, is not whether its twincharged. Its whether it is supercharged. That is what the add says. So, all those that say it is twin charged. Now answer this- Is it supercharged?

As I said in post #8

The Skoda ad states, "The vRS that you can buy has a TSI engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged".  I pointed this out in another post back in November.  There is NO supercharger on a VRS engine.  The ad does not mention twincharged.

Cut and paste directly from the ad -

"We can now claim the world’s fastest 2.0 litre supercharged production car… NEEEEEAAAAAOOOOOWWWWWW! The vRS that you can buy has a TSI engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged. It can do 0-62 in just 6.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 154mph".

So the ad is incorrect.

Edit. If it is really twincharged then it will have a supercharger. Im learning all the time. But is the vRS truely twincharged? According to wiki, a twincharger isnt just a turbo, as someone here stated. Its both a turbo and supercharger.

@Philbes. I was mainly aiming that question at those who kept saying it was twincharged. They seemed to think a twincharger was just a turbo. So i asked them whether they thought the car actually had a supercharger asd well.

incorrect again I'm afraid.

As regards the Octavia line up there are no supercharges whatsoever, just a single turbo.

The Fabia 1.4 VRS is twin charged  (Turbo & super).

The 2.0 TFSI is only turbo charged with a single turbo.

Maybe you can take Skoda to the advertising standards authority and get them to add a supercharger seeing that they are advertising it with one.  That should be good for 260HP+ as standard.

The twincharger term was used only for the 1.4 TSI which had both, a supercharger and a turbo. It was used ONLY for THAT 1.4 TSI engine. Current TSI engines (all of them) only use a turbo of various designations. They also use regular turbos, not the twin-scroll type used by the likes of BMW.

The add refers to the Boneville edition which is a highly modified car with over 800hp. That is clearly not a car you can buy...

Didnt the ad also state the vehicles you can buy are both turbo and supercharged?

That engine is no longer available to purchase on any VAG car.

Really?

The vRS that you can buy has a TSI engine, which is both turbocharged and supercharged. It can do 0-62 in just 6.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 154mph,

But yes it is wrong.

Why did they stop selling it? Just curious

Hmm, it seems I spoke too strongly on a subject I thought I knew more about.

I've seen a number of VAG cars with twincharging, the Fabia had it, the Polo had it.

But it looks I was indeed mistaken about the Octavia line.

Apologies.

Why did they stop selling it? Just curious

Lack of reliability and bad PR most likely.
