not sure how much voucher only good for Halfords.

Michael.

My Stepson forgot his MOT, by about two weeks......

Rang Halfords on a Sunday. Gave him a time same day. Car passed and from memory was under £40.

All MOT stations regulated by the same body so there shouldn't be any difference, although I'm sure people will tell me otherwise..

I would imagine that wherever you take your car should not make a difference as all MOT test stations are supposed to be regulated by the same rules and regs and all testers have to have the correct qualification.

"All MOT test stations are supposed to be regulated by the same rules" - is, of course, true but it is surprising how the cut price offers for MOTs can lead to significantly more expense compared with paying the full whack. Having had two retest experiences which confirmed this I now always MOT via a trusted repair garage.

BUT I would suggest that Halfords is NOT in this category having a firm eye on reputation and would be one cut price offer I would consider.

Had mine done at half price by Halfords. There were a couple of bulbs needed doing & they did those for me free of charge.

The MOT station itself was rather run down, but as others have mentioned the rules and tools are the same everywhere.

I'd definitely go back.

I can't see why the actual test should be any different.

They may, like some other garages, try to squeeze extra cash from you however.

More common with female customers I find.

If it does fail, you don't have to have it repaired by the garage that did the MOT but.....

Taken from VOSA

"VOSA stipulates that there are only two sets of re-Test circumstances where the price for a re-Test is zero – that is 'Free'.

If the vehicle has failed the MoT and is left at the Testing Station for repair and re-Test and does not leave the Testing Station, then the re-Test is free.

If the vehicle fails because of one or more items on the list of specific items below, provided the vehicle is returned for re-Test by the end of the next working day, then no fee applies."

When I need MOT's I use the local council. They don't do repairs so they have nothing to gain by way of additional work from failing the car. Very thorough and excellent facility.

I've been reading their reviews and they don't look too good, however I plan to get my car tested at Halfords next month, so I'll see how they operate.  Hopefully it shouldn't be any different from me testing my car myself, which I have done before and failed it.  I'll be sure to have a look at the brake performance readings, headlamp adjustment, emissions and everything else we check on a MOT the week before they get it.

I also use the local council, but that may also be because I work for them   That said they do a good fair job as they do not do repairs.

I had mine done at Halfords once. They failed it on the indicator repeater in nearside mirror not being as bright as the offside one! They wanted £123 to fix it. I replaced the LED thingy myself but it did cost £43 from local Skoda dealer. Had to pay retest fee because dealer couldn't get the part within the one day cut off time. I wasn't impressed & won't be going to them again.

Council garages, bus depots or even the local VOSA place. They're all governed by the same rules, can't charge more than the stipulated fee and have the added bonus that they have no motivation to fail a vehicle unnecessarily. Anything but halfrauds.

I thought it was 10 working days for a free retest?

VOSA: Re-test by next working day or charges apply

When did that change?

I don't think it did-unless some centres used a longer period as a promotion.

You can take it away for up too 10 working days. But the garage can charge you a partial retest fee

I normally get the MOT done when the 12 month service is being done.

Not all places are the same.

2 years ago the test centre that the dealer uses, they were driving my car in and out of the bay and around their yard with the bonnet stuck up.

Found out as I have an in-car camera. Proved this to the service garage, no very helpful they just said 'was the car damaged?'

A fair point but, just don't feel happy at their attitude. Guess where my business went.

Always use Halfords Autocentre. MOT test is £27.42 and very rarely costs any more.

DO NOT have your car serviced there though.

Why not?

So instead of making a bland and pointless statement, how about giving an explanation of why not?

This. Best way of getting an unbiased test.

Because whether they should do or not, many private garages do

use the MOT system to drum up (often unnecessary) work.
