Heated Windscreen and chips

Featured Replies

After 3000ish miless I appear to have a couple of chips on the windscreen.  Has anyone else noticed the heated windscreen seems quite susceptable to chips?

My old 54plate Focus' heated windscreen was tough as nails and only died when a ned decided to put a brick through it for some reason but the Octy's screen seems far weaker.

Also does anyone know if you can resin repair a heated screen?

The windscreen is heated?

Yes you can. Get it done ASAP is my advice. One day you'll use the screen and it'll cracking.

Been there with ford screens

Mine seems fine, I doubt they use different type of glass for the heated version....

my mondeo heated screen took a stone on the motorway and cracked.  replacement has had a chip which has been repaired.  i have wondered if it is a bit 'soft' but suspect our roads are breaking up more/swept less lately and that is the cause of the damage.

Manufacturers tend to use the same glass with the only difference being heated screens have mesh elements within the central cellulose laminate.

edit: Heated windscreens with stone chips can be more likely to crack than non-heated screen due to the rapid rise in temperate when the heating element is turned on. A heated screen can go from freezing to warm in seconds.  Try placing cold glass within boiling water and see how quickly it cracks. This is why some manufacturers do not allow the screens elements to be switched on until the interior temperature rises above 3-4 degrees. Any stone chips or defects makes breakage for both heated and non-heated screens much more likely in cold weather. This is one good reason for getting chips fixed quickly. As the advert says, most insurers will fix a stone chip for free, without affecting your no-claims bonus.

Touching very large piece of wood, no chips on mine. However I strongly recommend you get Autoglass out to do a chip repair - it's free if you've got comprehensive insurance and when I had a very nasty chip in the windscreen of my sports car it was completely invisible after the repair. The quicker you get it repaired, the more likely that the repair will be strong and invisible.
