Preparing for Turbo Failure

Featured Replies

Afternoon Guys,

I have just started a new job and have been given a car allowance to compensate.

The Fabia VRS is remapped to 170bhp and 270lbs (conservative).

The turbo has not given me any signs of failure as of yet, however I am aware that sometimes they can go boom without any warning.

Maybe its spending time on this site too much, as I have this feeling I'm driving a time bomb till it goes.

To try and ease my mind somewhat, I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to "prepare" for the boom.. such as find someone in the Manchester area can take it off and inspect it - or something similar.

If it does go... do i just turn the engine off and wait to be towed? As i have never had AA in my 10 years of driving - but feel I may need join up now I have the furby and doing more miles.

Get AA cover and get a good Garrett PD130 turbo ready at home as a spare if your that worried.

From when people reported turbo failure on here it seemed to go at around the 90k mile mark.

I believe awesome gti do a turbo check from what i remember from another post on here and they are in manchester.

They can sometimes throw pieces of metal down your pipework and destroy your cooler too so I'd say it's quite a gamble at what actually happens :(

I Bought a pd150 turbo and stuck that on for piece of mind. when the original turbo (no evidence of it being changed) there is play in the shaft and oil in the intercooler pipes.

I'd say do it before it goes!

If I buy another PD130 turbo - do I need to remap it again?

Are you preparing for the end of the world too!?!?! :hi:

Got your will sorted :)

Rubbish!

Stop listening to the interweb! Its full of people who are scared to leave the house!

Every forum loves scaremongering! If you listened to what problems are on forums you'd sack driving off and get a bus pass

Fair Enough..

I know I sound like an old women but i would rather prevention than find a cure.

As mentioned the turbo isnt making noises - but still want it checking all the same. Awesome GTI has quoted about £130.

As jase said I wouldn't worry. About 2% of Vrs owners are prob on here. The rest are out there doing their business. Unless your Turbo is screaming at you then just keep driving normally .

To do what exactly?

Remove the TIP and feel how much play is in the shaft/check its making boost?

As you can't check any other wear without getting the turbo off and stripped. :)

Might as well put that £130 towards a new turbo IMO.

As much as it stings my manly rating... I wouldnt know what to do to check it myself pal

Then that's a good reason to start learning. :)

As Kev says take the intake pipe off and downpipe and check for play side to side and in and out.

You can also use VCDS lite to check actual boost version requested boost. Actual should follow requested with maybe a brief overboost around 2k rpm.

I'd get a garrett turbo ready and swap when convenient tbh.

can I ask what makes you say that when lots of vrs' are 120k+ and still on original? (not being funny - just curious?)

also does the garrett bolt straight on? and will it need remapping again?

cheers

Aslong as you replace like for like and dont upgrade your map will be fine

When you say lots? Mine went at 123,000 miles which from reading over my 5 years on here was good going, plenty have gone sub 100k. In all honesty the turbos are a bit chocy, some do last a while but it's very hit and miss compared to the garrett counterparts.

You've said you're doing more miles for work and I assume you need it to be reliable so for a few hundred quid I'd swap it. If you were not dependant on the car and could cope without it for a bit then I'd maybe carry on in the hope it gives some warning before dying but then if it doesnt then you run the risk of it just dying.

have you got any links to any you could suggest?

If you happen to get a good value PD150 turbo (Model GT1749vb) you could do the swap, and as you have a reasonable condition used PD130 turbo afterwards, you can sell that to recoup some of the cost.  Then all is good. :)
