Oh **** have I trashed my car underneath

Featured Replies

I hit the underneath of my car (2010vrs) leaving a park with a large bang. When I first looked I could not find a problem.

I have jacked it up and found a bent bolt which has snapped an area of what looks like a sub frame just in front of the lower suspension. I enclose a picture. (taken from drivers side across the car suspension arm where axle stand is) Can anyone tell me please what damage this is please.

Thats the crossmember/subframe that the steering rack & anti roll bar etc is fitted to & its bolted to the car body, with the damage to that corner it needs replacing, hopefully the bent bolt will come out ok,no idea of cost though.

Looks like you have split the subframe around the bolt! May be a case of whip the subframe off to straighten it back up and weld? And a replacement bolt.

Suppose that would be best case! What did you hit?

Ouch, sorry to see this.  Hope your pride and joy is fixed quickly and it is not too expensive.  I think it will need replacing rather than welding.

A very low metal pole. Do I need a main dealer or a crash repair garage please?

A main dealer or a good independant garage should be able to repair/replace that,it doesnt need to go to a bodyshop(unless there is more damage that we cant see) does the car drive straight & ok?

Drives perfectly.

I only found it as I was replacing discs and pads but saw that first and thought I needed to change my underwear. Trouble is I am in Belgium for the next 6 months and my French / Dutch is bad. There is a SEAT main dealer garage up the road that charge 50 euros cash for labour an hour might try them. I guess it is a labour intensive job.

Is it dangerous to drive with the sub frame *******

Not really up to me to say if its safe however if it was mine & i couldnt get it repaired asap id remove the bent bolt & fit a new one with a bigger washer fitted as a tempary measure until i could get it replaced.  ;)

Thanks I agree. I have 2 young kids so need to sort it asap. Will take it up the road tomorrow and see what they say. Otherwise will have to dig deep to a Skoda dealer over here with a Dutch friend or if it's gonna be crazy money claim on my insurance. But I have a 1k excess.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Shouldnt be anywhere near a £1000 to repair,id guess at a couple of hours labour at the most & the cost of the subframe(you could even fit a secondhand one if you can get one.

Really, I might take it to a Skoda dealer then. I thought it was gonna be mega bucks. Does it share this cross member / subframe with any SEAT or VW cars do you happen to know please?

Could be the same as a mk5 golf gti but im not 100% positive.

Re very low metal pole

Can't you approach council/pole owners for compensation?

Not in Belgium no liability insurance !!!!

It was so badly damaged that the Skoda dealer would not let me take the car away. At last impressed with a Belgium Skoda dealer.

So given a little Fabia while they replace a very broken sub frame. Makes me realise the power the VRS has. Fabia like a pedal go kart !!!

any ideas on cost? fair play to them for holding the car though, if you had a prang you just dunno how it could effect it.

I was very impressed too. They showed me the damage. It meant nothing was holding that area of the car to the chassis .

Only 450 quid which I was also pleased with. Thought I might need a mortgage.

Ouch!

Far better safe than sorry though.

Just seen thread, gutted for you mucker. Glad it's all in hand though, result on price too! I am sure if you ask they can produce invoice etc in English for you to keep service record etc for car intact.
