Felicia "beef up" required

Featured Replies

Following on from my intro, I'm after some advice on what can be done to the 1.3 felicia on power, suspension and brake side of things.

I've done loads of modifying on fords and done a fair bit of work on skoda's, vw's and audi's but just normal repair or servicing. I'm on a decent wage but at the same I'm not looking to pour bucket loads of money into it.

Any help will be appreciated :)

Thanks, Darren.

It all boils down to how much you have to spend, my favourite power hike is to swap the engine out for a 1.4 16v engine from a 6n polo which gives 100bhp as a turnkey solution, dead easy transplant and can be done inside a day if you have all the bits you need, a few folks have followed this route on here now, there's a geezer called Juan27 on here who has done one very recently.. Also there is a nice little brake caliper conversion you can do which uses ford mondeo calipers for a 256mm vented disc which gives a good increase in stopping power.

Thanks for all of that tom, if I wasn't going to propose to my misses in a few weeks is be very tempted to buy an afh engine but that will have to wait for now.

On the brake side of things that's handy to know, would have to wait until next pay day though. Any idea if callipers from a mk5 fiesta zetec s would do the job?

Most ford calipers have the same 3.5" mounting centres for the brake caliper lugs, but the offset varies depending on model/thickness of the discs, I don't know if the fiesta ones will fit but a pair of mondeo calipers is only going to cost you £20 from a breakers yard I'd say.

Oh right, I'll have to look into that. Not so much the money involved in buying them just the availability of them.

Granda/Sierra ones are the preferred choice, but they are rare as rocking horse poop nowadays.

Also what wheels fit well on these? Obviously I won't be abit to fit the larger brakes until I get some bigger wheels. Will polo bbs split rims fit?

Yes, it's a standard vw 4 stud fitment. I like those bbs splits from a polo gti.

Cheers again, don't really know any other wheel types than that and g60's but not a fan of those. Ideally anything 195/185 would be good for me.

I run g60 steels on mine, on 195/50/15 tyres, but I would recommend a 45 profile for anybody else.

I like the standard look of them but don't fancy paying a lot for them. How much did yours set you back?

I can't remember now, I bought them new from a vw dealership about 4 years ago, they are about £30 each if I recall.

Hmm not to pricey, I was expecting worse. It's an option if I can't find some second hand.

Thanks again, I must have looked through your project about 5 times now already lol.

Just being curious here, how much would a felicia on 60k, fairly decent bodywork with a afh, 14/15" wheels and brake upgrade sell for?

Hi Darren

Hope you aren't falling into the same trap as my post.

'What is it worth'

Anyway I hope you manage to achieve the mods to your car that you have floating round in your head.

It's always a problem when funds are tight and you want them all NOW, yes it happens to us all.

@TeflonTom

Have you posted any info on the conversion on your Felicia to the 1.8T, would love to see it and understand the complexity of the fitment.

I am on several VAG based forums and love to read the upgrades people do to their cars.

I often wonder about the complications of actually getting the modified car insured once these upgrades have been completed.

Good luck with your upgrades Darren and keep us up to date with your progress.

Cheers Pete

Here you go Pete http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/209180-felicia-18t-transplant-thread/

Insurance was a breeze to sort out, £440 fully comp which did attract some restrictions such as limited mileage, it was convincing the dvla which was the difficult thing. Endless tooing and frowing between me and vosa and the dvla to get it properly registered all legit.

I think that's a difficult question to answer on any modded car, but particularly on an generally unloved standard model like the Felicia. In my opinion unless you buy pretty much all used parts very luckily/cheaply the mods are going to cost significantly more than the value of the standard car and its unlikely you'll get that back on sale. Also as the market for modded Felicias is fairly small it may take a while to sell.

Both the AFH and brakes are really good conversions but probably not wise investments.

You can get them just pricey as favourites for kit cars and Sierras now thin on the ground in scrapyards. For my money it was worth paying a bit more for them to avoid taking the uprights off the car to have them redrilled.

Thanks guys, was just theoreticalising (not a word I know) to if it would be worth my time and money for doing to what really would be a daily runner to and from work with occasional weekend blast.

I running sierra calipers on kia disks front 256mm and mk2 golf gti rear disk set up and rolling on 16s 7.5j lowered by 40mm engine is a standard 1.6 but decat and air filter not much more power but fun at lights....
