Lotsa questions, help me again please ;)

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, Having been very pleased with my current car, We are in the very fortunate position of being able to order a new one, and I am looking to get a new vRS hatch as a long term car.

Currently my thinking is:

2.0 TDi Manual

Metal Grey Metallic (I love understatement and think it looks classy;))

Black Pack

Amundsen

Canton

Sunset Glass

Colour multi-function display

Kessy

Spare wheel ('cause I am old school :p)

Questions I have ...

I am seriously  considering the 5 year warranty, is it worth it ?

What is the current build time ?

As there are no offers on at the moment (vat free etc) what sort of % should I expect to be able to haggle off the total price ?

Anything worth considering that I haven't listed ?

Edited by Mr Grump

The warranty is worth it. Anytime, anyhow. This is the main reason to buy brand new, as opposed to used car IMO.

As for offers. Check the best price from the numerous online sites (drivethedeal etc etc) and also What Car.

Then dont do a deal until someone matches the best price you have found online.

Afterall, if a dealer can sell a car at online broker prices when you go through an online broker, then they must be able to sell it to you personally at that price. Afterall, the online brokers take a fee from the dealer, so dealers will be saving money by selling to you personally at that price.

As there are no deals going, getting these prices shouldnt be too bad. Whatever you do, dont do what i did, and allow yourself to be hoodwinked into paying list price. Only good thing was i had the 0% APR

Free servicing has stopped and the pcp deals are 2. Some thing % but should be on SUK website.

Try carwow also very good I got 9% off a new Golf Gti on order this weekend by using carwow to get my local dealer to price match.

also did the same for the wifes new vRS.

lead times are 5mnths if lucky....seems very hit and miss at mo.

I'd say about 20 weeks for a factory order vRS

Nice choice.

I have both KESSY and Colour Maxidot on mine as well as other bits and pieces.

The car was specced for the dealership Manager so I didn't get any say in the spec, it just came along at the right price!

Although I do use both, I think they are both things you could probably do without and save a few pennies.

Spare wheel is a good call as is the Canton....

Yeah, 5-6 months was what I expected for a vRS from earlier scanning of the forums, thanks for confirming guys :)

I did think the warranty was worth it, Modern cars are expensive beasts when things stop working. (just an inbuilt aversion to "extra warranties" was  hindering my thought process :p)

Any thoughts on spec ? ... was thinking of adding the heated front screen too ...

Yes, I could do without some things ... but TBH I plan to keep the car for a while and thought I should spec what I want rather than regret it later ... colour maxidot isn't an expensive option, but Kessy is, although I do like the idea of that a lot :)

Heated screen is useful, sunroof is lovely.

I'd opt for the Winter Pack over the keyless entry. I have keyless on my Focus just now and I'm not getting it on the Octavia. The heated windscreen though. Yes.

Same thought process as me, order everything you want providing you are willing to pay the extra, i've done it before, save myself some £££ but then regretting not getting it at a later date.

afraid i can't comment on anything really as mines still on order, but i would suggest extended warranty if your planning on keeping the car for a few years, shame it doesn't come with 5 years as standard though

Hmmmm.. You may want to see if you can get an extended test drive period, not saying the TDI ain't the one for you but, many users here on the forum are saying it looks like a hot hatch with little to back it up under your right foot. That being the case, you may wish to have a tuning box or re-map fitted in which case the extended warranty may not be something worth paying for. Maybe way off base but, I'd try for the extended test drive if your gonna keep it a long time.

Regards

T

Are you trading in your old car? If so its the cost to change thats more important. I'd certainly have the 5 year warrenty.

Mr Grump, I would save on both the Canton and the Amundsen, and use the funds to go for the DSG instead:)

Amundsen for me is only looks - my garmin, my samsung galaxy and the bolero on my car together cost half as much as the Amundsen. And I can use my mobile and my garmin OUTSIDE of the car as well if I need navigation. Bolero and standard speakers are just right for most people

I know which options i'd knock off and add on, but its personal choice really. Not a lot of point asking others because they will be thinking different to you. For example, id say scrap the vRS and go for Elegance trim.

Out of your options (if it were me and i was buying a vRS), id scrap black pack (once upon a time it cost extra to get body coloured wing mirrors and bumpers, now it costs more to go back to black), and probably Canton and Kessy (Push buttoin start up is fun, but wouldnt pay extra for it). Would definitely add Cruise Control, and probably winter pack.

But thats me, and seemingly a lot of people like the black pack.

Sat nav, for me, is a must :) ... I do have an older separate sat nav, but I hate that stuck to the windscreen nonsense, inbuilt satisfies my tidy interior fetish

Canton ... TBH the only place I get to listen to music at a volume I like now, is the car, so that's the reasoning for that, Bolero on my current car is OK, but a bit lacking for me.

DSG ... hmmm ... just thinking long term might be an expense/potential problem area ?

I will be test driving, but TBH Going from 115hp to 180hp should feel better anyways ... I am pretty sure it'll be enough for spirited driving, I don't need to win any races ;)

For me the TD RS hits a sweet spot for daily running costs and a bit of oomph.

I did look at the elegance, but specced up similarly, the price is pretty much the same from what I could see on the configurator ... and its a little less power.

Kessy push button is nice ... main thing that I like is the just walk up to the car and get in, get out and walk away and its locks itself. Ok a bit of a luxury item ... but hey what can I say, I am a sucker for convenience features

Like others here this is just my opinion but, I would take off the canton first but keep/add the Amundsen. I thought I would regret not having the Canton but really, my Amundsen is great, more than enough to impress my son as we both listen to rather bassy / fast music. The sat-nav just took us door to door without a mistake from Aberdeen to the centre of Glasgow.

I would agree with removing the Kessy and adding the winter pack. It was the thing I missed most.

(sort of wish I had got a spare wheel as well!!!)

Are you wanting Bi Xenons? If so, then yes, i can imagine there is very little difference between the two once specced up.

I didnt want Bi Xenons, so it was a no brainer.

Thanks all, Test Drove the TDi estate as that's the only vRS they had, loved it.

My main concern was if the suspension was going to be a bit harsh with the 18" wheels, but it felt firm yet not uncomfortable, and the seats fitted me like a glove ... so comfy !

Just ordered the car, now for the long wait !!

Final specs:

Metal Grey Metallic (basically like the old anthracite)

5 year extended warranty

Kessy

Sunset Glass

Spare Wheel

Black Pack

Amundsen Sat Nav

Heated Windscreen

Heated Front Seats

Canton Sound System

Heated Washer Nozzles

Colour Multi-Function Display

Nice spec.

Did dealer give you any money off? You made the mistake i did. Turn up, test drive, and order, all on the same day. They know you are keen, and are much less likely to give you money off. Im totally changing my tact next time

Yep, basically got all the added spec items for free. Might not be the best deal, but I am happy with it.

I was prepared to walk if I wasn't happy with the deal, Sales guy wanted me to deal today, so he went back a few times "to the manager" until I was happy.

Good dealers though, I dealt with them before, friendly and helpful and always have been so for me, so I am happy to deal with them even if I might have got a slightly better deal elsewere. (online "broker" place I tried came in about £6-700 less).

* pretty sure I didn't spec the winter pack at the online one too.

Edited by Mr Grump

Nice. Doesnt sound too bad.

If you got all the options for free and are basically paying RRP for the car without options then thats getting towards £3000 of extras on that car, that would be a good deal, thats around 12% or something, just off the top of my head rough figures??

Great deal, great car, great spec! :-)

As for the arguments about TSI vs TDI, yes I agree that if you do low mileage then the TSI makes sense, however, I used to have a mk2 vRS TSI and swapped it for a TDI, reason was the regular trips to the petrol station and the relatively poor MPG that I used to get from it, I was around 25mpg around town, but swapped to the TDI and get 45mpg easily on my daily travels, so whilst my monthly payment is slightly higher the fuel bill is a lot less!  It sounds like odd logic, but I prefer to put £20 per week in as opposed to putting £35 per week, its better out of my weekly budget, also, I am not a traffic light racer, so the TDI does hit that sweet spot, a great round town and daily workhorse, but has some grunt if needed, so a great all rounder.

My mk3 is being built this week, so am looking forward to March 1st, I feel like a kid with an advent calendar at xmas counting down the days!!!

Enjoy the wait and most importantly enjoy the car!

Thanks guys, and Yes James, that is exactly my attitude towards fuel costs .... also when you consider the extra outlay on the RS is only ~£300 and diesel is a few pence more, you still can eat up that without doing a huge amount of miles.

I think it worked out to 11% discount, so pretty close maths there !

I won't enjoy waiting ... I am very impatient, but for once I decided that getting exactly what I wanted was worth holding out for, especially As I plan on a long term ownership for this car :)

Hope all goes well for your pick-up

Wasn't there a way to track your build I saw mentioned ? perhaps I have to wait a couple of weeks before its in the system but maybe it'll help seeing its progress (or frustrate !)

Great choice.

Was you dealer able to confirm availability of the Metal Grey? Reason for asking is that following my order for a Race Blue TSI vRS hatch in December, I have in the last couple of week been trying to change my order to the Metal Grey. Dealer says that although the colour option is on their order system, the factory will not accept the colour request at the moment and that they just need to keep trying on the system. Having spoken with Skoda UK. last week, I was advised that Metal Grey will only be available from the 27th January, but the dealer was not able to confirm this. I have been assured that the change in order will not delay the build! Will wait and see. Just curious on what your dealer advised you in this respect.
