suspension dilemma

Featured Replies

Hi, am wanting to change my springs and dampers but can't make a decision on which to use. From a ride and handling aspect i would prefer to use a bilstein /eibach combination but this would only lower the car by 15mm at best. The alternative is to use H+R springs but am not sure how good the ride quality will be. Has anyone used 50mm H+R with springs with bilstein dampers ? Ideally i would like the car lowered around 25 mm but doesn't look possible without going down the coilover route ?

Yep, the b12 (eibach and bilstein) kit will only get you around 15mm lower than you are now.

The H&R "50mm" kit will lower a vrs around 30-35mm as it's already 15mm lower than a regular octavia.  H&R 40260-1 kit is billed as a "comfort cup kit" so might be what you're after?

Coilovers would give you exactly the ride height you want and the ability to tweak/change as much as you want.  Ride quality on my H&R monotubes is excellent btw.

The H&R springs will work fine with the Bilstein B8 dampers but the ride will be a little stiffer compared to the likes of the Eibach Pro springs.

Coilovers will be a good choice in terms of getting the high how you want it but they can be stiffer again depending on which kit you go for.

Maybe the best compromise would like be the H+R 35mm springs to give a drop of 20mm but hopefully slightly better ride quality than the 50mm ones . Other thing of course is that to buy the dampers and springs separately is more expensive than buying the b12

Kit

Choosing suspension is unfortunately a real pain in the arse - difficult to work out what's what and how it's going to perform and expensive if you make a mistake.  I've had koni/eibach then weitec coilovers on the old car, then bilstein b16 and now h&r monotubes on this one.  Although the h&r's aren't cheap they are the best of the bunch for ride quality.

I've also been down the springs and coilovers route and am on H&R Monotubes now. They are comfortable but I think there is a bit of compromise when it comes to handling but all in they're the best I've used.
