Painting the grille red - what should I use?

Featured Replies

OK I dont know if it will be very clear from this picture, but the Golf is meant to have a red outline surrounding the grille which has faded quite badly.

I want to paint this back in. How easy is it to do and what should I use?

I'd use red paint.

LOL, I meant is there any special type :D

tricky one that, are you going to remove the old paint and apply new ?

Actually, given its not going to be a concourse car I'd just get a red touch up pot from Halfords and paint it in with that.

Might be worth going over the old paint with some primer first, just to make sure the new paint adheres OK. I'm assuming that Corrida Red (or whatever VW call it) will be what you're after...

Could be fun trying to paint on a nice neat line, though - I'd be half-inclined to see if I couldn't get a grille with all the paint on from my nearest breaker's yard...

Genuine new grilles are

I'm sure on that program with Mike Brewer and Ed CHina where they restore a Golf the red stripes can pop out so you can paint the whole thing and then put it back again, dont know how you do it though

Some red model paint for plastic is pretty good, humbrol etc.

Have you been on Golf GTi forums?

Nope. The red stripe is painted on.

There is a lower metal strip that is clipped onto the grille, but that's colour coded.

Yes, but one of them hardly has any posts (demonvw) and the other (clubgti) is slow and almost impossible to do searches on as they always fail. Besides which it doesnt quite seem to have the "spirit" this forum has :)

you should buy a copy of performance vw or the golf mags. they have loads of usefull adverts.

i actually binned my grill with the red surround in favour of an all black one! i took all the red trim off as the car was dark and didnt seem to suit it

Yes the gaiter is the leather (or plastic) bit round the bottom of the gearstick.

If the trim doesn't come out, a small brush and either Humbrol or Japlac would do the trick.

PS I'm guessing she's running better this week if these are the top priorities now :D

GPC are quite handy as they buy in bulk from Germany & make minimal profit.

If you can, get yourself to GTI International as you can pick up some cracking bargains. It's a long way to travel for us people in the North East, but the bargains are worth it.

I've stopped using Club GTI forum as the mentality of some of the users are questionable!

And, yes, it's very slow.

i used to use andyspares when i had the renault, they do alot of the old VW parts as well, german. swedish and french i think they call themselves... but i'm sure a google search for andyspares works.
