I think I got it wrong, will the cheap blue lead talk to my Octavia 2?

Featured Replies

Evenin all, just signed up and introduced myself, probably a classic newbie error just committed.

I thought that one of those cheap leads on ebay and thought the VCDS lite would let me talk to my Octavia 2, it recognises the car port but I can't get into any of the sections on VCDS lite, getting a no-response message.

I only want to turn the aux lead on on my Bolero radio as 'touch wood' there's nothing I need to go in and fix.

So, can someone confirm, do I need to get hold of the proper expensive VCDS to carry out such a task?

I have done a search and found quite a few threads and people have done this successfully, unfortunately they don't mention which version or spec is being used

Many thanks, lots of VW experience but not had to get into this side of things before..

There is only one VCDS cable, and that is the genuine purchase either direct from Ross-tech or one of the UK based authorised sellers such as Gendan.  For the Octavia MK2 you can get either the full HEX+CAN lead, or if you have no interest in using it with older cars you can get the Micro CAN version.

If the HEX-CAN cable costs less than £249 new then there is a good chance its a counterfeit cable.

Thanks for the replies,

lesson learnt, just sat in the car for an hour, bloomin freezing out there it is!

oh well, I'm sure I'm not the first, at least it's only a tenner down the drain.

I did go to my local Skoda dealer but they had no idea what I wanted them to do, spent ages pulling bits of interior around looking for the aux in that must be hidden somewhere!  Said it would be £50 to plug it in plus the time spent doing it.  Didn't fill me with confidence tbh, still it's cheaper than a £250 cable!

I only want to listen to 6 music, I can't be doing with FM anymore...

I don't think you actually need a Gen lead for VCDS Lite, as they state it's for use with 'third party' leads unless I've read it all wrong.

I am not sure from the chart below if VCDS-Lite will do what you want without paying $99 for a licence.

Do you have a Jumbo box with an auxiliary socket in it?

Dont forget the Octy MK2 is full canbus diagnostics, so the cheap K line interfaces are not going to work as the OP found out.

Looking into that list, and bearing in mind I'm not 100% on this, but it looks like I need the full package.

Must be a local garage with the kit, I'll ask around.

Cheers

so a silly question but would a registered version of vcds lite allow me to clear a bulb out fault with a 'cheaper' cable

Your question was answered by mannyo's post... Your car is CAN bus - the cheap VCDS-Lite has no support for the CAN bus

oh yeah must read things properly! might need to thing vcp or a decent code creader then, if not vcds in full.

thanks

Am up in Redhill, with VCDS, if that's any help to you. :)

Thanks RainbowFire, that's a kind offer, I'll get in touch.

A Mark 2 will work on the K-Line only for access to the Engine to allow generic OBD code reading - the rest of the modules will require Canbus.

Boom!  Someone else sadly burned by the cheap Ebay cable saga again. :(
