ECU Removal

Featured Replies

Going to be sending my ECU away to DarkSide Developments Monday and a few other bits.

Before I remove the ECU and ship out, Is there anything I *need* to be aware of before hand?

Yeah they're a right sod to get out!

They have some kind of anti tamper cage. You'll need to remove the wipers too.

Yes make sure, if opened, that is sealed properly.

If not water/moister will get into the ECU since the side facing engine is common for water from windshield to drop on top (ECU ) and may get in.

Some pictures of removal might be useful.

sorry don´t have pics but,

1. take out both wipers

2. take out rubber seal

3. remove plastic that captures water from windshield (remove to windshield as the water hoses for windshield nozels are atached)

4. remove central metal protection unbolting the 2 screws

5. grab ECU and remove from holding clips

6. if you have alarm need to violate metal cover, I used a small disk cutter to do this.

Well I've got so far, but stumped by this stupid anti-tamper cage. :S

Don't want to damage anything by yanking on it.

The screws you mention on step 4, don't seem to look like screws, more rivets than anything.

If I remove the two nuts holding the ECU down and give it a wiggle, should the whole thing come free?

Removed the two screws holding it down and part of the firewall/bulkhead to see if it would just slide out that way. Nope.

The ‘rivets’ are shear bolts (the head shears off when tightened up to stop them from being removed) you need to have a flat cut into the head with a grinder / dremel, then use a flat headed screwdriver to undo the bolts.

Made the slots in the heads... nothing.

So erm... Got frustrated with it and just cut the security bracket off!

But now I have a wet bum, I don't have a garage to work in and it started to rain again when I finally got the bracket off...

no need to worry, plug it in as the versions without alarm donnot have the bracket
